Strong support
forTerry Fox
Run continues
For nearly two decades, people have
been running, walking, cycling and
skating to raise money for cancer
research at the annual Terry Fox Run.
In the T -A coverage area at Sunday's
event, 169 people raised nearly '8,500
and organizers say the total will
increase as more pledges come in.
The number of participants in the
Exeter event increased to 60 from last
year's total of 39. As of Monday morn-
ing, $3,753 had been pledged but
organizer Jane Hundey is confident the
total will: surpass last year's $3,961
total.
In Lucan, $1,600 has been pledged to
the 45 participants. This is the first
year the Knights of Columbus orga-
nized Lucan's event and spokesperson
Marius Vandenberg is already looking
forward to next year's Fox Run when
he hopes Lucan can out -do London on
a per capita basis.
Wendy Rowan, Zurich's organizer is
pleased with the number of partici-
pants and amount raised in Sunday's
event. Sixty-four people completed the
course in Zurich, up from 45 last year.
So far, $3,000 has been raised, also an
increase from last year.
Rowan said she has started a list of
ideas for next year's event.
At Exeter Public School, students
raised $600 at a Friday afternoon
walls, up from last year's total of $410.
All 440 students participated in the
walk nicknamed Toonies For Terry.
The event continues a legacy started
by Terry Fox who was diagnosed with
bone cancer in his right leg in 1977.
His leg was amputated six inches
above his knee. While in hospital,
Terry was so overcome by the suffer-
ing of cancer patients that he decided
to run across Canada to raise funds for
cancer research. His 1980 journey was
called The Marathon of Hope.
More than $200 million has been
raised worldwide for cancer research
through Terry Fox Runs.
