Roy's Garage: Small band, big sound
By Katherine Harding
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER ----- Area me-
chanics don't have . to
worry about competing
with Roy's Garage --- un-
less you're another
blues -based rock band.
The two-year-old Exet-
er and area based band
is quickly making a name
for themselves on the lo-
cal music scene. They are
booked solid this summer
and are even scheduled
to play two shows at the
Zurich Bean Festival on
Aug. 28.
"We are known for hav-
ing the biggest three
piece sound around,"
said band founder and
drummer Bob Stuckless.
The band is completed
by guitarist and lead
singer Darryl Romphf
and bass guitarist Cam
Dougall who are the most
recent additions to Roy's
Garage. Romphf and
Dougall, both recent
grads of South Huron
District High School, have
been friends since public
school and have been
playing in bands together
since Grade 8.
Stuckless, an employee
at Veri Trucking in Exet-
Roy's Garage will be playing two shows at the Zurich Bean Festival on Aug. 28.
From left, band members Bob Stuckless, Darryl Romphf and Cam Dougall.
er, said he's also always
been "in and out of
bands."
Once a week the band
rehearses for three to
five hours at Stuckless'
house just outside of Ex-
eter and their practice is
beginning to pay off.
While all three band
members help to book
gigs, Stuckless says the
"word isgetting out"
about Roy's Garage and
people are actually call-
ing them now.
The trio say the fact
they get along so well
has helped them
progress so quickly as a
band.
"Each guy has his own

e
rules and we really re-
spect each,.other," said
Romphf.
"It's easy to 'com-
municate well with just
three people," said Dou-
gall.
While the band hasn't
recorded any music yet,
Roy's Garage may be go-
ing into the studio next
year to work on a CD.
"We play everything
from Hendrix to the Hip
and everything in be-
tween," said Romphf.
Stuckless added the
band is always adding to
their set list to keep it
fresh.
"It is always evolving,"
he said:
"We are always up-
dating our songs so us
and our listeners don't
get bored," Romphf said,
who added the blues is
their favourite music to
play.
The band is also work-
ing on their own materi-
al which they usually test
out in small doses during
live performances.
Stuckless said the orig-
inal band had a hard
time coming up with a
name and were going to
go with just The Garage
until their former bass
player came up with
their present name.
Stuckless' nickname is
Roy (because of his ten-
dency to call . everyone
Roy) and since the band
has always rehearsed in
his garage it just seemed
natural.
