Written by Robertson Davies, this . is the first production of A Jig for the Gypsy since 1973, which is puzzling since the play is so well writ- ten. Directed by the thea- tre's artistic co-director Jeff Culbert, the playbe- gins during the 1885 election in Wales. Striv- ing to have a liberal elected in the rural rid- ing for the first time in decades the local can- didate is taken to a gypsy fortune teller, Benoni Richards, played excep- tionally by Virginia Prat - ten. The plot of this mixture of comedy, - drama and mysticism gets into full swing when Benoni pre- dicts the liberal can- didate, Sir John Jebson, will win the election. Word quickly spreads around the country about Benoni's pre- diction and the con- servative incumbent's supporters go on the de- fensive, threatening to kick Benoni off her prop- erty. OPP suspect the thieves must be familiar with the vehicles because the carts are hard to hot- wire. Lawnmower found EXETER — Police are looking for the owners of a lawnmower. The older model mower had been aban- doned on a Hardy Street property for a week. If the lawnmower is yours visit or call the Exeter OPP de- tachment (235-1300) to identify it. Jig for the Gypsy is more comple4 and showcases much better dialogue than the Ausable Thea- tre's last production, Communing with Claire. And although the play runs at nearly three hours --- including two intermissions -- it moves along fairly smoothly and keeps the audience inter- ested. On the whole, A Jig for the Gypsy is a strong pro- duction by the Ausable Theatre, although there were several flubbed lines by the actors which indicates either a case of nerves or trouble re- membering the script. A Jig for the Gypsy runs until Aug. 28 and caps off the theatre's sec- ond season. Here's hoping next year the theatre will -con- tinue to bring interesting and well produced plays to the area.
