ZURICH --- You, too, can
do your part to save the
Babe.
The 'Babe' is the Babe
Siebert Memorial Centre,
sometimes more common-
ly known as the Zurich
Arena.
The arena has long
needed a new, regulation
size ice pad and that it the
first leg of an $800,000
drive to complete improve-
ments at the arena.
That leg, which includes
new boards, glass and
benches, will be accom-
plished at $430,000. The
second leg, marked at the
$600,000 point, would
create new change rooms
and an entrance.
The campaign will finish
at $800,000 or beyond
with an expansion of the
arena to make it regula-
tion size.
Arena improvement
committee vice -chairper-
son Cheryl Durand said if
the project is a huge suc-
Comrnuni
it "mit
underway to save the Babe
cess and raises more
money than anticipated,
the committee will look at
building a whole new
arena complex.
Current plans would
leave the auditorium part
of the building at the front
alone.
The campaign has raised
$24,000 to date. The next
step of the campaign is
neighbourhood canvassing
and there are a number of
fund-raising events
planned including a
Halloween Bash and a
Millennium New Year's
Eve celebration. More
details on those events will
be released soon.
The Zurich Firefighters
held a breakfast on
Saturday with all proceeds
to the arena project.
Work is set to begin on
the new ice pad when the
ice is taken out on April 1,
2000, and the surface,
boards and stands are
demolished. The goal is to
have the new ice surface
.ready on Aug. 1, 2000,
well in- time for the
2000/2001 hockey and ice
skating seasons.
Durand said the new
change rooms would be
next on the agenda for fall
2000.
Village council loaned
the arena improvement
committee $10,000 for a
geotechnical study to find
out if the ground under-
neath the current arena
site was contaminated by
breen, a byproduct of arti-
ficial ice creation. The
study came back with a
negative result for excess
breen, a positive note for
the improvement commit-
tee.
Durand and arena man-
ager Kevin Geoffrey said
the committee's next move
is to find out if the, jroject
qualifies for any federal or
provincial grants and
apply for them.
Last week the improve-
ment committee unveiled
a new campaign sign with
the traditional thermome-
ter to show how close the
campaign is to its goal.,

entrance and an expan-
sion of the ice service to
regulation size.Abserit
