Couture, 10, plays cen- tre with the Toronto Pro Hockey Development Group novice hockey team that won the 10th annual Brick Super Novice Invitational Hockey Tournament in Edmonton Aug. 4-8. The Brick Super Novice tourney is considered the most prestigious competi- tion for 10 -year-old hock- ey players in North America. Other teams participating in the tour- nament included - Vancouver, Seattle, Western Canada Native Selects, Calgary, Edmonton, Minnesota, Detroit and Boston. The Toronto team came from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Winnipeg Jr. Jets 3-2 in the final. Toronto doubled the Los Angeles Jr. Kings 4-2 in the semi-final. Couture scored a goal in the semi- final and ended with two goals and three assists over the tournament. Couture was chosen third star in the semi-final win and was given a tro- phy for the honour. A number of Lucan area businesses, groups and individuals sponsored Couture's sweaters: Premium Pork, Lucan Knights of Columbus, Theo and Kathy Sentjens, Urbshott-Galloway Insurance, Bryanston- Birr Optimists, Pete's Sports, Downtown Pontiac -Buick of St. Marys and C -J Pink Ltd. While a top young talent on the ice, hockey isn't Couture's first sporting love -- baseball is: This year he is playing short- stop/pitcher for the Oakridge minor mosquito team from London. Couturewas disappoint- ed with a second place finish at the regional. Honda Hit -Run -Throw baseball skills competition in Corunna on Aug. 1. Couture has won the last two national titles in his age division. Couture said he should: do better next year since he'll be in the same age division but a year older. Couture has taken a season off of playing lacrosse but plans to resume cross country running when his school' year =begins a -t. Prince Andrew in the fall. Pinder, 13, finished third in the guts 12-13 division at the Canadian Optimist Junior Golf Championships at Ingersoll Golf & Country Club last week. The Canadian Optimist tourney is as far as junior girl golfers can go in competition. Pinder, who golfs out of Ironwood Golf Club and who has participated in the club's junior program, notched her first hole -in -one at the Ainsdale Golf & Country Club during the Junior Girls All -Ontario tourney on July 26.
