Getting it over. Exeter Express pitcher Dave Russell, left, throws one over the
plate to aTilisonburg batter during Sunday's league playoff game atA(vin Willens
Field. Russell pitched well but his team still lost 6-5.
Express in must win situation
EXETER — Unearned
runs are continuing ham-
mer nails in the coffin of
the Exeter Express men's
hardball •club.
Four unearned runs in
the top of the seventh
inning during Sun4a0
game against the ;
place Tillsonburg Red Sox
led the way to a 6-5 loss
for Exeter. The game was
the second of three league
playoff games._ If the
Express didn't win their
third playoff game versus
Lakeside at home yester-
day after press, they will
be eliminated and will not
play in the final league
playoff tournament at St.
Marys on Aug. 21.
If Exeter won yester-
day's game, there will be
a tie-breaker based on
least runs allowed to see
which of a possible three
teams tied at 1-2 during
the first playoff games
makes it to the final tour-
nament.
Win or lose, Exeter will
play a couple of exhibition
games (yet to be sched-
uled) during the rest of
the month to tune up for
the OBA final tournament
on. Labour Day weekend
at Glanbrook near
Hamilton.
Fred Gregus, Scott

the way offensively for the
Express Sunday with
three singles each. Scott

Errors again plagued
the Express with Rick
Boon committing three
goofs and Kemp and Hopf
both giving up an error.
Starting pitcher Scott
Russell put in a solid per-
formance after a couple
weeks away from the
mound. He gave up six
runs (only two earned) in
eight innings. He struck
out seven, walked two
and gave up eight singles.
Midget call up Nick
Regier pitched the ninth
inning and gave up a hit
and a walk which result-
ed in no runs.
Regier pitched against
the meat of Tillsonburg's
order. Express manager
Doug Fairbairn said
Regier has a future as a
pitcher.
"He's got a live- arm and
a sharp breaking ball,"
Fairbairn said. "I would
think that he'll be a really
good pitcher if he sticks
with it."
- Exeter lost its first play-
off game earlier in the
week at Strathroy 12-7.
"We showed up with
only nine guys for a pIay-
off game against the sec-
ond place team in the
so we pretty much
knew we were going to
have a tough night,"
Fairbairn said.
The good and bad news
is Exeter's defense was
sharper than usual with
only four of 6rs: two b
Mike McCabe and one
each by Merner and Scott
Russell. The bad: news is
those errors led to eight
unearned runs In the first
inning.
All nine starters got at
least one hit for the
Express. Dave Russell led
the way with a double
and a triple while Vic
Oliveira and McCabe had
two singles each. Gregus,
Scott Russell, Nate Burns,
Merner and Dale Hopf all
had a single each.
Starting pitcher Bung
gave up 12 runs in six
innings, only three of
them earned. He struck
out one and walked seven
while giving up six sin-
gles, three doubles, a
triple and a home run.
Masters beat unbeaten Marconi
LONDON -- The Exeter Masters
could have had their second official
victory of the season over the unbeat-
en first place Marconi — if onty the
referee showed up.
Exeter shutout Marconi 3-0 in
London on Aug. 12. The team decided
to play a game despite the fact it would
not count in the standings without a
referee.
Exeter Masters spokesperson Brad
Lightfoot said the teams decided to
play a game anyway and a Marconi
coach acted as ref. The official game
will be rescheduled.
Peter Hakvoort, Lightfoot and
Richard Verberne scored Exeter's
goals and Colin Coburn backstopped.
the shutout.
"It was a great overall effort,"
Lightfoot said. "(Coburn) played a good
game in net with some good and timely
saves."
The game marked the first action fbr
the Exeter squad in three weeks.
Despite the win, Exeter's record
remains 1-7-1.
