Council wants
Ausable Centre
to pay for all
building costs
LUCAN BIDDULPI
Council is still trying to
work out the final details
of a deal which willsee
the Ausable Centre lease
the former Village of
Lucan municipal office for
$1/year.
While council has
already agreed to the
five-year lease, it wants
ensure the Ausable
Centre has to pay for all
repairs needed to the
building once the lease
begins. `r.'... r .:1"`•'v
Township administrator
Ron Reymer said while
the intention of the deal is
that the Ausable Centre
pay for all repairs -- with
no cost to the township's
ratepayers -- the wording
of the current deal isn't
"quite there" and needs
to be fixed.
Coun. Hazy Wraith
expressed his concerns
about who will pay for
repairs. He said if the roof
of the former village office
needs to be replaced, he
doesn't want to see the
township theh hook o k for
the cost.
Deputy Reeve Bob
Benner said council is
looking fora "net -net

GODERICH. ' ---How
healthy is Lake Huron?
The answer given at
Saturday's Lake Huron
shoreline conference
depended on who you
talked to.
Dr. Gall Krantzberg,
Great Lakes Program
Coordinator with the
Ontario Ministry of the
Environment, said the
lake is in "good condition"
but is in a "bit of peril."
Lake Huron is relatively
healthy compared to
other freshwater lakes
but without conservation,
the lake's future is not
guaranteed.
Cottagers and year-
round lakeshore residents
at the conference were
mostly concerned about
poor water quality, par-
ticularly about pollution
from e.coli bacteria.

Surface Water Quality
Coalition, 'an alliance of

municipalities, agencies
and landowners, present-

Huron's water quality.
A year ago, the coalition
agreed to "stop pointing
fingers" and to develop a
local solution to water
quality problems.
Residents of Huron
County are in conflict over
who is polluting the water
and who has a right to
use it. Tourism, agricul-
ture and industry, drive
the county's economy and
all rely on clean water to
prosper.

"Most (hog farmers)
care about the environ-
ment," Bradshaw said.
"They live where they
work."
Bradshaw said the num-
ber of hogs produced in
Ontario per year has
remained constant since
1977 at 3.7 million but
hogs are being intensified
on fewer fares.
Economics are forcing
farmers to increase their
operations. A farm family
can "hardly make a liv-
ing" from a 300 sow far -
operation,

Bradshaw said.f
He admitted citizens are
justified in complaining
about hog operations that
pollute the environment.
"Ontario Pork must
ensure pork farmers are
acting in an environmen-
tally good way,"
Bradshaw said.

chairman of the Huron

Committee, told the audi-
ence about options for
