By Carmel Sweeney ZIMICILCQUESPAMaa ZURICH - Winners of the Golden Agers shuffling in July were: Gloria Mousseau, 379; Ron Dann, 352 and a second time 333; Ralph Bradford, 310; Fred Willard, 288; Roger Truemner, 260; Sien Smits 253 and a sec- ond time 247. A parish elimination draw, barbecue supper and corn roast was held on August 8 sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. The first ticket drawn was worth $1,000 and was split between Marjorie Meidinger, Rose- Ann Overholt, Debbie Pennings and two daugh- ters, all of Zurich. The third last ticket drawn was worth $500 and was won by Ross Fisher of Zurich. The second last ticket drawn worth $1,000 was split by Ron and Sandra Dickert, Exeter, and Cecilia Smith, Zurich. The grand prize of $10,000 was won by Clarence and Joan Regier, RR #3 Zurich. Anyone who missed hockey registration at the Zurich arena, can still sign up on August 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m:; or phone Nancy: Regier at "2.36=4420. Coaches, mart= agers and trainers are needed. Phone Kim McKinnon at 236-7757. The Catholic RurarLife group will be meeting at the Exeter Arena on August 24. The topic will be the "New Farm Crisis" with a presentation made by Dr. William Heffernan and wife Judy. An appreciation supper was held at the township hall on August 5 for those who helped at the Zurich Fair. President John .Geiger welcomed every- one. The Zurich Community Yard Sale will be held August 14. There will be a Firemen's Breakfast served at the fire hall that morning from 7 to 11 a.m. Three families in the area hosted children from Belarus for the past six weeks. The children left for home on August 8. Steve and Deb Overholt in Zurich had 10 -year-old Ekatrina (better known as Kate to the Bedard fami- ly). They took her to see Canada's Wonderland, Niagara Falls, Collingwood and area beaches. She really liked all the green grass and trees. - Don and Charlene (Desch had the same girl back again they had last year. Jack and Shelly Bender are also involved with the program. The children at the Zurich Playground have been playing games in the park, doing crafts, enjoyed a trip to Wally sWorid in London, doing summer Olympics and drama activities. They also enjoyed stay- ing in tents one night, and having a Weiner roast. The playground program is finished'uovwand the swimming lessons end on Thursday. The windup for the play- ground program was a trip to London Regional Museum on August 2. The children went to the beach in Goderich on Friday. Helpers are needed to clean up the Bean Festival kitchen on August 18 at 6:30 p.m. Cooking of the beans will begin on August 22. Volunteers will be needed at 6:30 p.m. each evening that week (except August 25) to help stir the beans. Personals Rose Regier and her family celebrated her 70th birthday on August 2. Neil and Melissa Francis and Aaron from Orleans, near Ottawa, are spend- ing this week visiting with her parents Mozart and Marie Gelinas Sr. and twin sister Michele who is in Zurich from B.C. Her father Mozart celebrated his .80th birthday on August 7. Cam Rader and Laura Pearson were married on August '7 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church:. A reception and dinner was held in Hensall. Cam is the son of Jerry and Brenda Rader, Zurich. Several `skunks' 'appeared on the lawn at the home of ` Moiart Gelinas Sr. who recently celebrated his 80th birth- day. On August 7 a birth- day, party was held for Mozart and his brother- in-law George Harvey of Michigan (who will also be 80 on August 29) at the home of Paul and Heather Klopp, RR 12 Zurich. Musical entertainment and skits filled the after- noon with a pig roast sup- per following. Raymond and Bobbi Regier, Leeanne and Jamie Regier, Nicole, Sean, Paul and Renea Clendenning of Hensall and Jim and Denise Dietrich, Zurich and their children spent the Civic holiday camping at Sauble Beach. Bobbi celebrated her birthday on August 2. Ray and Rebecca Geromette of St. Clair Shores, Michigan visited her mother Nora Corriveau at the Spruce Villa Apartments last week. Margaret Deichert pre- sented a farewell gift to long-time fair board members Jerry and Diane Thiel who will be moving in the fall. A buck and doe will be held for Stephanie Peters and Doug Hugill on August 14 at the Seaforth Arena. She is the daugh- ter of Jake Peters, Zurich. Family members visited with George and Maria Mathonia, over the week- end and daughter Carmen and Brendan Ferndes and granddaughter from Toronto spent a. few days in Zurich this week. Gary and Bette Flaxbard of Kitchener spent the weekend visiting with his parents Earl and Anne Flaxbard and were among those who attended the Rader -Pearson wedding." on Saturday. Happy birthday wishes go to Joeanne Durand on August 4; Carrie Eybergen on August 8; and Aimee Rau on August 9. Norm and • Myrna Thomas and Emily spent last week on vacation in Sudbury visiting with her sister and family. A family reunion was held at the cottage of Dot Hess near Port Franks for the McDougall relatives. The family of Rick and Marge Gingerich spent last week camping at Tobermory. Dr. Bruce Eickmeier has returned from Halifax where he gave a presen- tation at the Canadian Dental Association Convention. This is a national convention attended by dentists from across Canada. Gardiners hold annual picnic By Roberta Templeman $TAFFA CORRESPONDENT STAFFA - The Gardiner family held their 34th annual picnic on July 25 with 65 people present. Marion Barr won the prize for having the most grandchildren at the picnic. The children enjoyed the races with Laura Barr winning the under five prize and the boys under five was won by Mitchell Howatt. The winner of the six and seven year olds was Keith Macintosh and the eight and nine year winner was Brandon Shute. The ten years and over race was won by Jason Skipper. The young children enjoyed the three legged race won by Jonathon and Neil Barr. The older children's winners were Kelly and Laurie Vandendool. The adults enjoyed a three legged race won by Betty Hanson and Tracy Barr. Mitchell Howatt won the sack race. Winner in the kick the slipper was Justin Skipper. Guessing the M&Ms in a jar was won by Edwin Shute; Justin Skipper and Brandon Shute wan the balloon toss and the adult balloon toss was won by Tim Shute and Dave Hanson. An adult relay game of tossing the bale was won by Aubrey Ross's team. Linda Ross guessed what was in the mystery can and Jean Ross had the most buttons on her blouse, with ,Bruce Ross having the most but- ' tons on his shirt. The Bearss family was in charge of the sports. Family members helped John Templeman celebrate his 75th birthday this past weekend. John and Roberta Templeman visited on Sunday afternoon with Elizabeth Hunkin at Teeswater. Gerri and J.J. Neilson visited on Thursday with John and Roberta Templeman: Blue Water residents have front rowseat for Friedsb ZURICH - On July 27 the men at Blue Water Rest Home gathered in the auditorium to discuss the mechanics of the Titanic and farming. A model of the Titanic was viewed and the men gave their opinions on its good points and weaknesses. They discussed aspects of farm- ing in their lifetime and present modern trends. Carman Lovie, Neil Mustard, Stewart Thiel, Bill Burr, Harry Maas, Bob Carson, Roy Gingerich and Herbert Schlundt, under the lead- ership of Ann McBride enjoyed the discussions. On July 29 Max Ducharme and The Townliners entertained the residents, Phyllis Deichert on the, piano, Harvey Smith' on the gui- tar, and Ducharme on the violin. Auxiliary volun- teers Donna Klopp and Lottie Grenier served refreshments and had many residents dancing to the old time music. The Friedsburg Day Parade in Dashwood was enjoyed by the residents. "One Foot in the Furrow" was the theme in honour. of the International Plowing Match to be held in late September near Dashwood. Residents Martha and Eben Weigand allowed the resi- dents the use of their front yard for a close view. Maintenance staff mem- ber. and: Dashwood resi- dent Ervin Steinmann was the tour guide and volun- teer driver. On August 2 Philippa Steckle provided piano music for the sing along in the auditorium. In the afternoon the residents watched Show Boat on the big screen. On August 3 the resi- dents enjoyed a shopping trip to the Goderich Mall with volunteer driver Glen Thiel, Adjuvant Cathy Shantz and volunteer Pam Wulterkens and Theresa Stark assisted the resi- dents. Loftus Denomme, Carman Lovie, Kurt Gebel, Beatrice Rader, Bernice Cann and Florence Brown perused the many dis- plays and made their pur- chases. On August 4 the resi- dents enjoyed watermelon in the shade of the court- yard. A .watermelon seed contest was cancelled due. to the seedless watermel- on purchase. However everyone enjoyed talking about watermelons and fresh fruit. Thursday afternoon chapel service was con- ducted by Evelyn and Rev. Art Krueger, Church of God, Grand Bend and Rev. Bob Peebles, a retired United. Church minister from Exeter and Fr. Mario Cassar, interim priest from St. Boniface Church, Zurich. Thursday evening the residents gathered in the courtyard for a barbecue. Volunteer Kay Webb helped along with chef Cathy Shantz. Sweet corn was donated frim the farm of Mary Regier of Zurich. Regier also provides the home with gladioli bouquets each fall. Over the week- end, the Epilepsy Society, also donated large bou- quets of glads .to. the Home. The residents gath- ered Saturday morning to discuss their flower beds with Adjuvant Charlene Finkbelner. The residents finished off their week with the Swinging Seniors, a local up consisting of Phillis eichert, Claire Masse, .4 Andrew Rau, Lois Hodgins and Doug Insley. Those who attended, Sunday morning service at Zurich Mennonite Church were Margaret Hess, Clarence Gascho, Bernice Cann, Beatrice Rader and Roy Gingerich. Others preferred to watch the church service on T.V. The Monday noon meal was enjoyed by tenants of Maplewoods Apartments, Ina Neeb, Meda O'Brien, Verda Baechler, Helen and Lloyd Otterbein, Vera Shantz and Anna Erb. Condolences go to the familyk and friends of the late Marie Juliette Denomme who passed away at Blue Water on July 16 in her 98th year. Juliette enjoyed the many visits from her children and grandchildren who live in the area and light ened her days. Condolences go to the family -and friends of the late Mabel Ann Kyle who passed away at Blue Water on August 2, just four days shy of her 90th birthday. Mabel was well known as a member of the Eastern Star and the knowledgeable woman on the cosmetic counter at the local drug stores in Hensall, and later Exeter. Josephine Dietrich of Zurich is a new resident of the Home. George Chapman of Bayfield has also moved to Blue Water. Leonard Onn is back at Blue Water_ after being a patient in London Hospital. Mabel Riley is back at Blue Water after being a patient at South Huron Hospital in Exeter. parade Best wishes go to Adeline Denomy who is a patient at -South Huron Hospital. Exeter. Robert (Bob) Carson is a patient at South Street campus of Victoria Hospital in. London. The residents look forward to their August birthday party with Hensall United.
