Zurich council rectifies

By Scott Nixon

ZURICH -- A recent
billing mistake at the vil-
lage hall has Zurich
council trying to fix
things.
Councilor and rec-
reation board member
Shelley Rodgers -Bedard
reported the mistake to
council at,, its Aug. 5.
meeting `~ }
At Zurich Public
School's recent gradua-
tion at the hall, arena
manager Kevin Geoffrey
charged the school only
$50, when in fact the
charge for a Friday night
event is about $350,
Rodgers -Bedard said.
The school originally had
asked for a Thursday
night booking, for which
the arena charges $50,
but when that was
booked Geoffrey gave the
school the Friday night
booking but only charged
at Thursday night's
rates.
St. Boniface School re-
cently held a school so-
cial event at the hall and
was charged the full Fri-
day night cost.
Rodgers -Bedard said
the recreation board rec-
ommended nothing be
done about the . mistake
because it would be un-
fair to ,Marge Zurich
Public School the addi-
tional money and the
board didn't want to -re-
bate any money :to . St.
Boniface.
Reeve Dwayne .LaPorte
disagreed with the rec-
reation board's rec-
ommendation, saying
something _ had to be
done to fix the situation.
Coun. Brad Clausius
agreed, saying St. Bon-
iface should be re-
imbursed and the two
schools should be treated
equally.
"All we're trying to do
here is make it fair," La-
Porte said.
Council decided on a
$100 rebate to St. Bon-
iface on its next hall ren-
tal. `P• '

Geoffrey made a bad
judgement call and said

Huron taking back Exeter OPP admin
By Craig Bradford
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — It's a case of
back to the future for
Exeter OPP. administra-
tion.
The Huron County OPP
will take over the admin-
istration of the Exeter
OPP sometime this fall,
Hurons OPP Staff Sgt. Gary
Martin said.
Huron OPP had been
the administration centre
for the Exeter OPP
detachment up till about
a year and a half ago
when the responsibility
was shifted to the London
OPP.
At that time, the Mount
4; Forest OPP handled all
communications for
Huron, Perth, Bruce, Grey
and Wellington counties
but had become over-
loaded.
The London OPP helped
lessen Mount Forest's
load by taking over
responsibility for the
Exeter and south Huron
area including Hensall,
Zurich, part of Grand
Bend, Dashwood, St.
Joseph and Stephen and
Hay townships. Mount
Forest will take back the
communications centre
duties for the Exeter area
and the Huron OPP will
take back the administra-
tion responsibilities.
"All that changes is
where the dispatch comes
from," Martin said of the
administration and com-
munications centre
change over. "There's
going to be no discernible
impact (on on -the -road
police service). It's just a
change where paperwork
goes."
Martin dispelled the
rumour the Exeter OPP
detachment will be dis-
banded after Huron OPP
takes over administration
for the area. He did con-
firm the Huron OPP might
close its Goderich admin-
istration office and move
it to a new location in or
near Clinton, a more cen-
tralized county location. A
new administralion office
would be needed since
the existing detachment
in Clinton is too small to.
take on the administra-
tion responsibilities.
Officers would still
report to their four nor-
mal detachments includ-
ing the ones in Exeter and
Clinton.
Whether the Goderich
administration office will
move to Clinton and other
possible changes to polic-
ing in Huron are depen-
dent on the province
approving the county-
wide policing contract
Exeter and other Huron
County municipalities
have already approved.
Wingham opted out of the
county -wide scenario to
keep their municipal
force.
Lucan OPP detach-
ment's administration
and dispatch will continue
to be handled out of the
London OPP communica-
tions centre. ;
