Express turns it around
EXETER --- After being plagued by
unearned runs two weeks ago, the
Exeter Express tightened their belts
defensively Last week to win two games.
The Express beat Byron 17-10 and
Strathroy 11-6.
In the July 27 Byron victo-
ry; Jim Petrie filled in for
Rick Boon, the intended
starter who has shoulder
problems. Petrie gave up
eight runs, four of them
earned, In five and two-
thirds innings. He struck out
three, gave up seven singles,
one double, one triple and one home
run.
Reliever Paul (Lefty) Elston gave up
two earned runs, struck out two, walked
one and gave up three doubles in one
and one-third innings.
Dave Russell was the offensive star of
the night with four singles and a home
run.
"The only time he got out, he hit a
home run by everyone else's recollection
except for one person and that was the
umpire," said Express manager Doug
Fairbairn said.
The rest of the team supplied a bal-
anced attack. Vic Oliveira had three sin-
gles, Scott Russell had two, Dave Hawke
had a home run and Boon and Marty
Merner each had a double while Jim
Petrie and Scott Kemp contributed sin-
gles.
On July 28 against Strathroy, another
well-rounded offensive effort and only
one error resulted in a solid victory.
Oliveira had a home run
and one single, Scott
Russell, Boon and Hawke
had two singles, Kemp had a
single and Burns hit a dou-
ble while Merner, Dave
Russell and Dale Hopf each
had a single.
Scott Russell gave up six
earned runs in seven innings.
"We are starting to come around a lit-
tle bit defensively," Fairbairn said.
While the defence and offence are run-
ning well, pitching may be a factor down
the stretch. Boon is not the only pitcher
with shoulder problems; Kemp has been
diagnosed with rotator cuff tendinitis.
"That is three starters we have on the
shelf with the same problem," Fairbairn
said. "The health of our pitching con-
cerns me. The guys that we have
healthy are getting tired arms."
The Express has a direct entry into the
OBA tournament and Fairbairn hopes
he can rest the healthy pitchers and get
scone of the injured hurlers back before
the Labour Day weekend tournament.
`We are starting to
come around a tittle
bit defensivety."
