Old-fashioned service in Granton
By Katherine Harding
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
GRANTON -- Walking
into the Granton Handy
Hardware is an eye-open-
ing experience with the
store's proprietor Ron
Jones as your trusted
guide.
Enclosed within the
walls of this Victorian -
style grey brick store is
undoubtedly one of the
most jam=packed hard-
ware stores around.
In an era of `big box
stores', Jones has man-
aged to stay in busine'
for almost a quarter cen

and piing it high — right
to the roof. c;;,t

cleaning supplies and art
brushes to hockey sticks,
paint and thermal socks,
he carries thousands of
items of stock in his one -
room emporium.
Jones also prides himself
on knowing where each
item is within his hard-
ware labyrinth.
What does he think
about his larger competi-
tion in the city?
"They just cram stuff
into a bigger store," he
says simply. "Here you can
get quicker service
though; I help get all your
parts."
"I think I've been here so
long because I have more
regular customers than
those bigger stores," he
said. Jones says local
farmers make up most of
his client base.
While Jones has had
employees in the past to
help out, today he's a one
man show and serves as
the establishment's owner,
cashier, stock boy, and
even bookkeeper.
"It's just me and the
computer," he says with a
quiet chuckle.
Billed by Jones "as a
handy place to shop" he
has been operating the
store in the tiny hamlet
since October 1975 and
says he'll keep running it
"until I get tired of it."
Two years ago Jones
was almost side -lined by a
serious battle with dia-
betes but says today he's
"OK."
OK enough to keep his

Ron Jones has been run-
ning the Granton Handy
Hardware for more than
20 years.
