135th Zurich Fair - Plowing Toward the Millennium'
ZURICH - The hot humid weather of the
past week did not hamper exhibitors in
preparing their many exhibits for the
135th Zurich Fair, with the theme
"Plowing Toward the Millennium".
There were many entries in the
Needlework and Culinary Arts sections
with an excellent showing of exhibits. The
very hot weather may have kept some live-
stock exhibitors at home, but there were
exhibitors in the Haflinger Horse Show,
Sheep, Goat and Poultry Shows. There was
an excellent turnout of horses and riders
in the Local Amateur Horse and Pony
Show.
The Fair Official Opening was held
Friday night in the Zurich Arena. John
Geiger, president of the Zurich
Agricultural Society, introduced the follow-
ing who participated in the opening cere-
monies - Dwayne Laporte, Reeve of Zurich,
Jim Love, Reeve of Hay Township, Paul
Steckle, M.P. Huron -Bruce, and Graeme
Craig of Walton, Chair of the Local IMP '99
committee, who officially _opened the 1999
Zurich Fair.
A program of local entertainment fol-
lowed the official opening. Following the
musical program, the Zurich Lions Club
and Zurich Fair elimination draw and
dance concluded the day's activities.
Several people from the local area were
$25 draw winners with Mary Lou Erb of
Zurich winning the $1000.
Saturday's activities started- with a
parade using the fair theme for entries.
Following the parade fairgoers viewed the
inside exhibits, the livestock shows, the
."Babies on Parade" show, participated in
the children's mini tractor pull and arm
wrestling competitions. The men's cake
decorating contest that had 12 representa-
tives from local dubs and groups provided
a lot of entertainment in the community
centre. The decorated cakes were auc-
tioned off by Paul Mousseau with the pro-
ceeds going to the local arena renovations'
fund.
