Exeter Fury splits games
EXETER — The Exeter Fury men's
soccer team split their two games. Last
week, beating Taxandris 4-2 Sunday but
losing 3-0 July 21a Morningptar.
On ay
beginning - up an early goal to the
visiting Taxandria team but built up a 3-
1 lead by halftime.
Eater responded to the early
Taxandria marker with a goal of its own
when Tim Hundey calmly placed a
rebound into the corner to tie the game.
Brian Harrigan gave the Fury the lead
ashe made a tremendous run up the
side of the field, beat the defender and
walked in alone beating the keeper
Tasandria came close to scoring again
but Dan Snell, who played a strong
game on defence, was in position to kick
the ball off the goal line. Tim Proctor
then gave Exeter a 3-1 halftime lead as
he pushed a loose ball past the goalie.
In the second half Exeter controlled
nag of the play, passing thdbeB around
to the open man to create good scoring
chances.
, On one of those chances a Fury
was tackled in the box and Matt Sims
finished the play by blasting a penalty
shot into the right side of the net.
Taxandria managed a late goal to finish
the scoring.
Last Wednesday's game against
Morningstar was one of the poorer
efforts from the team this year. After
tying 3-3 last time these teams met,
Exeter could not get anything started
this game.
"We had no ball control today and it
showed," said Fury spokesman Jason
McFalls.
The Fury's record is 3-5-2 and their
next game is tonight (July 28) at 8:15
p.m. at the Rec Centre against the White
Eagles.
Exeter Royals post two victories
EXETER - The Exeter
Royals improved their
season's record in the
Ontario Junior Men's
Fastball League last
week to 11 wins and four
losses with victories over
Stratford and New
Dundee.
On Sunday afternoon,
Exeter travelled to New
Dundee and came away
with an 8-1 victory. Geoff
Maver led the offence
with two hits and a walk
while scoring three runs.
Ryan Sanders singled
and walked and scored
two runs. Scott
Leonhardt pitched two
innings and allowed one
run. Steve Cook pitched
five innings, allowing no
hits while striking out
seven.
On Tuesday in Exeter
the Royals overcame a 5-
0 deficit by scoring four
runs in the fourth inning
and another four runs in
the sixth inning in an 8-7
win.
Darren Kints led the
offence with a single and
double and two runs bat-
ted in. He also scored
two runs. 'Geoff Maver
singled and walked and
Gavin Snell added two
hits. Steve Cook was the
winning pitcher, allow-
ing seven hits and six
earned runs while walk-
ing three and striking
out eight.
Exeter hosted
Shakespeare last night
and play Mitchell twice
in the next week to com-
plete their regular sea-
son with the League
playoff tournament
scheduled for August 6,
7 and 8 in Maryhill.
