EXETER — "You get to
read lots of books and
you get to find stuff out,"
nine-year-old Daniel
Tordoff of Exeter told the
Times -Advocate when
asked why he was un-
dertaking the ambitious
task of reading 99 = books
in 1999.'. '
Tordoff and ''more than
70 other children have
signed up for the 99 in
99 Program at the Exet-
er library.
He has already read 99
books, enough to qualify
him for prizes and is
starting on his second
list of 99 books. Tordoff's
sister Erin has also
completed the program.
The idea behind the
program is to encour-
age reading, give the.
kids a goal and have
some fun," library staff-
er Jane Hundey said.
She is pleased with
the large number of
participants and hopes
at least 99 children sign
up. Forms can be
picked up at any library
participating in the pro-
gram.
Jeffery Simmons, 12,
of Exeter has also read
99 books this year and'.
has been inspired by the
chance to win prizes.
His -name has been en-
tered in a ' draw to win a
Year 2000 Student Edi-
tion of the M & S Ca-
nadian Encyclopedia on
CD-ROM. There will be
other draw prizes from
the . Exeter library as
well.
The contest is open to
children `.aged six to 14.
Participants must, docu-
ment they have read 99
books this year.
"It's •a wonderful pro-
gram," Daniel and
Erin's mother .Lynn
said. "The kids read all
the time."

sAusable Theatre's Communing
with Claire an enjoyable play

muning with Claire, t
Ausable Theatre's sec-
ond production this
year, is an enjoyable
romantic comedy and
is evidence that more
area 'residents should
get out and support
their community thea-
tre.
Written by Alberta
playwright Don Lemna,
Communing with Claire
is making its world
premiere at the Aus-
able Theatre and runs
until July 31. z :-
The play follows the
trials► and tribulations
of Claire and Larry,
who quickly fall in love
and marry.
Living in Toronto,
Claire wants to return._
to the moue ains and
revisit her Eliildhood,
while Larry wants to
pursue a career in
stockbroking in the
city.
What follows is a
light-hearted comedy
which sees Claire
ditching Larry and tak-
ing off out west to pur-
sue her dreams of life
in the wilderness. •
Larry stays in To-
ronto, where he re-
turns to a lifestyle of
hard drinking and
meets up with : a rich
floozy named Lorraine.
The play's best attrib-
ute is the performance
of Niki Kemeny as
Claire. Kemeny does an
excellent job of pulling
off a funny, energetic,
portrayal of a character
who can best be de-
scribed as a flake, al-
though a lovable one.
Another highlight is
the per ormance of Ja-
son Rip, who plays Ar-
thur, a huge redneck
Claire meets out west.
When Arthur falls in
love with Claire, the
plot becomes more
complicated because
Claire is still hoping the.
greedy and , self-
important Larry will re-
turn to her.
Also, the contrast in
size between Arthur
and. Claire is a source
of humour for the audi-
ence.
What - hurts Com-
muning with Claire is
what hurts most plays
— it's too long, es-
pecially the second act.
While the first act flows
along smoothly, the sec-
ond act is too wordy
and should be , shaved
down by about 20 min-
utes.

Construction on the four sand filters and the new"

says the town's service delivery manager Dave Moyer.
Construction began on the $4.5 million project May
I . "We've been pleased with the performance of the
contractor so far;' said Moyer. "They've done a good
job." Stonetown Construction, based out of St. Marys,
has hired 39 local employees and is using 33 pieces of
heavy equipment to get the job done.Above: workers
