"We want to get the message out that we want the OPP to aggressively see to the protection of the- busi- nesses and legitimate citizens in the village," said Coun. Bob Mann. "We have to get the message out we are not helpless." • Councillors were responding to a memo sent to them by village administrator Paul Turnball who had met with an upset 'business owner who wants council's help. Turnball wrote the owner of the Village Green mini golf Isla Johnsonis "fearful of her own safety in the late evening" and on three occasions has called the OPP to come by her business. • She advised Turnball items from her mini golf have been stolen three times already this summer and last week her building was broken into. She is also tired of teenagers congregating along her fence. Johnson feels their foul language is intimidating her customers. "We are trying to change the image of the village Id attract families put how are are going to get them to go down and p1 y Goofy golf if they have to listen to that type of language -- they won't want to come back," said Coun. Brian Knights. "How can we support busi- nesses in their hour of frustration?" This isn't just a Grand Bend issue -- it's society," said Mayor Cam Ivey. "Police presence isn't the issue." Council passed a resolution to set up a meeting immediately with Grand Bend OPP Sargent Larry Parks and North Lambton OPP Staff Sargent Charlie Bouwman to discuss the idea of "aggressive" policing in the village. "We need a damn good discussion on how our money is being spent," said Coun. Shirley Andraza. While Mayor Cam Ivey agrees the meeting is neces- sary, he thinks there is a• bigger issue with the 'small number of police stationed in the village. "If we don't get a county -wide contract there are going to be problems," he said. "Right now we are getting a level of service based on provincial standards -- we need a county contract," he said. Last week's meeting in Bayfield began with discus- sion of a letter from Hay Township council which stat- ed the township will not •sign the amalgamation deal with Zurich, Hensall, Stanley and Bayfield unless the group decides to allow a transition board to decide where the new municipality's offices will be located. The current committee has already decided the office will be at the Stanley TownshipComplex, but Hay has argued against it all along and says a transition board should investigate the matter further.
