Express slammed byrillsonburg but hang tough vs. Stratford, Byron EXETER -- The Exeter Express senior men's hard- ball team began the week on the right font but ended it face first. At home on July 13, Exeter edged Stratford 12- 11. Starting pitcher Scott Kemp threw three and two thirds innings giving up five runs, only two of them earned: He walked one, gave up seven singles, one double and two home runs. nick Boon pitched four and a third innings, giving up five runs, all earned, on six: singles, four doubles and two home runs. Kemp helped out in his own cause by leading the Express bats with a single and two home runs., Scott { Russell was hot at the plate as well with two doubles " and one homer. Jim Petrie added three singles, Dale Hopf had two singles and: Vic Oliveira, Marty Merner and Dave Russell all had a single each. Merner committed two errors. while Boon and. Dave Russell'made one each. "Again:, we made too many errors," Express manager Doug Fairbairn said, but tonight we were able to out hit our defen- ab'„road s$ t r +y, Exeter ' was outlasted by Byron 11-10. Kemp gave up only two singles in three and- a third innings but left the game when he felt some pain in his shoulder. Royals do well attournament in U.S. FRANKENMUTH, MICH. -- The Exeter Royals junior fastball team made their hometown proud with a solid showing at the International Softball Congress North American Junior Fastball Championships in Frankenmuth, Mich., last weekend. The Royals finished. eighth out of 16 teams. In their first game on Friday versus an all-star team from central Iowa, the. Royals were soundly beat- en 13-2. Exeter scored the first- run as ' Jon Carr scored on an RBI single by Jeremy Lambourne. Dan Storey scored Exeter's second run in the fifth In their second ' game, Scott Leonhardt pitched a one -hitter as the Royals blanked Breslau (On.) 2-0. Lambourne scored both • runs on singles by Jamie Boyd. Leonhardt struck out 11 and walked one. In the third game, a run in the bottom of the sev- enth by Boyd was the dif- ference in a close 54 vic- tory for the Royals over Owen Sound. Lambourne led the Exeter offence with three hits and he also scored a run.. Gavin Snell contributed a' double and a single while Steve Leonhardt doubled and Jeff Jones added an RBI single. Steve Cook was the starting pitcher and went four innings, allowing one run on one hit while walk- ing a batter and striking out six. Scott Leonhardt picked up the win in relief. Exeter hosted Stratford yesterday after press. Glavin also gave up six sin- gles, three doubles and a home run. Petrie led the attack with three singles while Hopf had a single and a double. Dave Russell had a double. and singles were notched by Merner and Boon. Exeter only committed one error, but it was costly leading to three unearned runs that inning. ' "Kemper was having a really strong game until he got. hurt,” Fairbairn said. "We just have to hope it's not serious. We can't afford another pitcher getting hurt right now." Exeter lost both ends of a 'doubleheader at Tillsonburg on the week- end, 7-4 in game one and 13-3 in game two. Game one was marred' by .:what Fairbairn feels 1s`- poor • umping. "You never want to blame a game on the umpires, but I'll tell you this was the worst exhibi- tion of officiating I've seen in a long time," he said. Exeter gave, up • four unearned runs in the first inning and eight all together. Hawke got blasted in his one and a third innings on the mound, giving up seven runs though only three were earned. He walked four and gave up three sin- gles. Dave Russell pitched three and a third innings, giving up six runs, only two earned. He struck out one and walked four while allowing four singles and one home run. Dave Russell hadthe highlight offensively for the Express by swatting a homer while Gregus, Boon, Kemp, Hopf and Bill Shore all had one single each. Boon, Shore, Petrie and Scott Russell each commit- ted an error each. With only 10 players making - the trip rto Tillsonburg, Fairbairn 18 questioning his players' commitment. "I think it is .time that some of our players take _a gut check and see if they. want to play baseball or not," Fairbairn said. "There are too many guys only showing up if they are in the mood. We'll never win anything with attitude 4t of and at this point it appears there are too many of the guys not willing to put in the extra work which is. required."
