Art gallery filling niche in Grand Bend:
By Katherine Harding
T1MES-ADVOCATE STAFF
GRAND BEND —
They're Grand Bend's
answer to the Group of
Seven.
Seven local artists are
in their third successful
season of running a co-
operative art gallery on
River Rd.
The River Road Art
Gallery, which is housed
in a transformed fish
house, showcases the
seven artists work along
with other consignment
pieces by local artists.
Art in the gallery runs
the gamut and uses sev-
eral types of medium
besides paint including
glass work, sculptures
and other fine art
objects.
The idea to set up the
art gallery on River Rd.
was inspired by Grznd
Bend Artist Barry
Richman who liked the
quaintness of the. road.
"This is a lovely street
for it," said fellow co-op
member Josy Hilkes
Britton.
Since their opening, the
gallery has depended on
brochures in local hotels
and word of mouth to
draw people to their
small gallery.
She said because the
gallery is connected to
Lindy's Fisherman's Cove
Restaurant most people
just stumble onto them
by chance.
"People usually find us
by accident," she said.
Hilkes Britton said
while most of their
patrons are primarily
tourists they have also
managed to develop a
local following.
Besides their gallery,
the artists display their
work at the Huron
Country Playhouse.
Ego problems?
Hilkes Britton says the
group is working well
together and egos are not
•an issue in displaying
*Work in the small venue.
"Everyone is a good
promoter 'of each other,"
said Hikes Britton.
Co-op members also
take turns staffing the
gallery which is open
from May until August.
Positive experience
For Hilkes Britton,
whose work is inspired
by nature, the venture
has been nothing but
positive.
"It is good for me to be
associated with them,"
the Pinery area resident
said. "It is inspiring to be
painting alongside
pebrS:"
She said besides the
comradery it is exciting
to see what the others
are working on and to
learn new techniques.
