EXETER -- Exeter may be the home of this area's
ambulance service some day soon.
Council discussed a report by chief administrative offi-
cer Rick Hundey that summed up a Huron County
report on the province's downloading of ambulance ser-
vice.
Co.mpetitive outsourced service management (more
simply, tendering for then establishing cotl.racts with
private or public sector ambulance services) was
deemed the most cost effective and easiest fit for Huron
County as recommended by county staff.
Other options looked at included negotiating contracts
with current service providers, setting up direct munici-
pal services and two management structures.
One suggestion from an outside agency report on
downloading ambulance services was to move the
Exeter area ambulance office from either Zurich or
Dashwood, the preference being Dashwood.
Conjecture has Grand Bend getting their own ambu-
lance service that right now is being supplied by
Dashwood's Hoffman Ambulance Service. The Zurich
and Dashwood services are deemed as being tworclose
to one another.
Coun. George Robertson questioned why either the
Zurich or Dashwood service should move their opera-
tions base to Exeter. He feels Exeter would somehow be
forced to pay for the move.
Reeve Roy Triebner and Mayor Ben Hoogenboom
assured Robertson Exeter would likely not have to pick
up the moving costs since ambulance services aren't
funded that way.
The final decision on the fttfure of ambulance services
in the county is up to county council.
Other notes from the meeting:
'.`.Permits up
The town issued six building permits worth a total
$480,000 in June. Topping the list was a five -unit town-
house on' Brookside Place worth $350,000.
Last June, five permits worth a total $104,000 were
issued.
Lucanites give blood
Twenty-six permits worth a total $3,022,395 have
been issued so far this year compared with 41 permits
worth $1,108,300 last year to this point.
Rodeo parade
Council OK'ed South Huron recreation program co-
ordinator Jo -Anne Field's request to hold the Exeter
Rodeo parade on Aug. 7 starting at 10:30 a.m.
The floats will gather on Andrew St. behind Canadian
Tire and on Huron St. E. The parade will start on Main
St. at Huron, travel north on Main St. to Victoria St. and
then turn east towards the Rec Centre.
In another rodeo matter, Coun. Peter Armstrong said
a "corporate challenge" event is being planned for the
Friday night fun show. The rodeo committee has
requested three councillors participate in a steer
wrestling event. Mayor Ben said he'd be there but no
one else oy volunteered.

LUCAN -- It was another successful night for Blood
Services London as a blood clinic at the Lucan Com-
munity Centre exceeded expectations.
Summer programcoordinator Pancham Keswani
said 87 blood donations were collected, up from the
quota of 60. Donations are slightly higher than last
summer's Lucan blood clinic, Keswani said.
Nine donations were deferred. Keswani said rea-
sons for deferrals include a low iron count, having a
body piercing or tattoo done within the last 12
months; having a dentist appointment within the last
three days and having a baby within the last six
months. Donors must also wait 56 days before do-
nating again.
Other programs Blood Services ,London is running
this summer includes Pints for Half -Pints, which cel-
ebrates child blood donor recipients; and Pitch in
and Save a Life, with Toronto Blue Jay pitcher Kel-
vin Escobar as a spokesperson.
Blood Services is also running a summer volunteer
program, run by Keswani. The volunteers work on
blood clinics, run special events such as car washes
and barbecues for donors. Their main goal is to
bring in more donations over the summer months,
Keswani said, because blood donations typically
drop substantially in the summer.
The next blood clinic in Lucan will be Dec. 2.
