Participants in Huron County Children for Chernobyl Association's 1999 program met last Thursday at the
Bender's farm in Stanley Twp. for a barbecue. Huron Bruce MP Paul Steckle attended the event.

ZURICH — "Wonderland," says
Ekatrina Petrachen assertively when
asked what her favourite experience
in Canada has been so far.

Chernobyl, to Huron County for six
weeks
summer.
The trip has been sponsored by
the Huron County for Children of
Chernobyl dissociation and 17 fami-
lies in the county have opened
their
hearts
and homes.
Petrachen
is being
hosted by
Zurich's Steve and Deb Overholt and
their three children Tabitha, Natalie
and Ashley.
Participating in the program for
the first time, Deb says Ekatrina has
been a joy to have.
"She love everything," said Deb.
"Everything is 'wow' for her. It does-
n't matter what it is."
Deb said like most girls her age,

She said communicating with
Ekatrina, who hails from the city of
Minsk, hasn't been much of a prob-
lem because she already knew basic
English when she arrived.

While she's here the Overholt's
have taken her on

day at Canada's Wonderland and
Niagara Falls.
The Overholt's children have also
taught her to ride a bike.
The family became interested i
hosting a child after talking to
friends who had been involved with
a similar program five years ago.
"A lot of organizations just want
money these days but we decided if
we were going to give money we

place to grow up."
This is the second year the Huron
association 'has been in operation.

The Canadian Relief Fund d for
Chernobyl Victims of Belarus, which
is the umbrella organization for
smaller groups like the Huron asso-
ciation, has been facilitating these
summer trips for,three years.
