MARYS - St. Marv; native, James Westmair is making quite a splash on the international opera stage. The 27 - year -old baritone recent- ly competed at the 'Cardiff Singer ' of the World' competition in Cardiff, Wales. The opportunity ' to' attend came after Westman won several competitions in . Canada, and a final competition in New York last year. A total of 25 singers repre- senting 25 countries competed for top hon- ours at Cardiff, consid- ered to be the most pres- gious international .pinging competition. In his preliminary con- cert, held on June 11, Westman won top hon- ours in his division, earn- ing an opportunity to compete as a finalist. During the concert he performed, 'bella sic - come' from Donizetti's comic opera 'Don Pasquale' and Rodrigo's `die -aria' from 'Don Carlo,' followed by selec- tions from Verdi, Ravel, and Rakhmaninov, fin- ishing with `Di Provenza' from Verdi's `La travia- ta.' For the finals the next day, Westman performed Macbeth's 'Pieta, rispet- to, amore', 'Tit for tat' by Britten and `Billy in the Darbies.'stman fin- ished with `Largo al fac- totum' from Rossini's 'the Barber of Seville.' BBC commentator Gaeme Kay wrote, "you can't beat a good Verdi baritone and Westman is a very good Verdi bari- tone. His tone is big and beefy, but polished and smooth." While the final was won by German soprano Anja Harteros, Westman's out- standing showing at Beating the heat Graduate - Jane and John . Gillespie are proud to announce the graduation of their son, Shawn, from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree.
