SPECIAL TO THE TIMES
ADVOCATE
ST. MARYS - St. Marv;
native, James Westmair
is making quite a splash
on the international
opera stage. The 27 -
year -old baritone recent-
ly competed at the
'Cardiff Singer ' of the
World' competition in
Cardiff, Wales.
The opportunity ' to'
attend came after
Westman won several
competitions in . Canada,
and a final competition in
New York last year. A
total of 25 singers repre-
senting 25 countries
competed for top hon-
ours at Cardiff, consid-
ered to be the most pres-
gious international
.pinging competition.
In his preliminary con-
cert, held on June 11,
Westman won top hon-
ours in his division, earn-
ing an opportunity to
compete as a finalist.
During the concert he
performed, 'bella sic -
come' from Donizetti's
comic opera 'Don
Pasquale' and Rodrigo's
`die -aria' from 'Don
Carlo,' followed by selec-
tions from Verdi, Ravel,
and Rakhmaninov, fin-
ishing with `Di Provenza'
from Verdi's `La travia-
ta.'
For the finals the next
day, Westman performed
Macbeth's 'Pieta, rispet-
to, amore', 'Tit for tat' by
Britten and `Billy in the
Darbies.'stman fin-
ished with `Largo al fac-
totum' from Rossini's 'the
Barber of Seville.'
BBC commentator
Gaeme Kay wrote, "you
can't beat a good Verdi
baritone and Westman is
a very good Verdi bari-
tone. His tone is big and
beefy, but polished and
smooth."
While the final was won
by German soprano Anja
Harteros, Westman's out-
standing showing at

Graduate - Jane and

fessional baseball with
the Frontier League's
Cook . County
Cheetahs in Chicago.
During the sweltering
temperatures recently,
Kori Miller, 10, (left) and
Jason Burtch, 1 I spent
the evening fishing in the
Ausable River near
