The team lost its two games soundly to Erindale (12-1) and to the London Hornets (11-0). Express manager Doug Fairbairn said action earlier in the week made it look like his club was improving, adding the goad news 'is the tournament's games don't count as regular season ones. On July 6, Exeter hosted Lakeside and battled hard for a close 11-9 loss. Exeter again, like many times this season, found themselves' dpwn early by giving • up five runs in the =first inning. "But we showed some heart and came back but came 'up a little short," Fairbairn said.. Fred Gregus led Exeter hitters with a home run and a single. Rick Boon also belted a homer while Vic Oliveira and Scott Russell had a double each and Nate Burns and Mark Glavin had sin- gles. Exeter stayed out of error trouble with wide tournament Scot; Russell committing the/only goof. Starting pitcher Scott Kemp gave up five earned runs on five singles, one double, one triple in ;one complete liming. He struck out two batters and walked one.. Scott Russell came in to pitch three innings and gave up two earned runs while striking out two and walking two. He also gave up three singles and a dou- ble. Burns threw for the first time this sea- son. He struck out two, walked five and gave up two doubles in two innings of work. He gave up three runs, two .of • them earned. Fairbairn said Burns',control problems are normal for someone who hasn't pitched all year: since it is now the . mid- dle of the season. Boon finished the game on the mound for Exeter and gave up one earned run in one inning of work. He also 'struck out one and gave up a single. The Express hosted Stratford yester- day after press, travel to Byron on Friday and host Strathroy at Alvin Willert Field on July 20, a 6:15 p.m. start. Not enouch good news.
