Many special activities have been planned to celebrate this occasion on the weekend of July 16-18. The cele- brations begin at 9 p.m. on Friday at the Outdoor Theatre with a stunnin slide presentation called "Staying Alive (Animal Defenses)". The speaker, Mr, Runtz is a naturalist, biologist, guide, teacher, consultant and author. His books include Algonquin Seasons, Moose Country, Wild Things etc. The slide pre- sentation is being spon- sored by Shivers and Shakes ice cream shop. The event continues - Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with a musical pre- sentation created just for Pinery by singer song- writer David Archibald. Children of all ages will enjoy songs like Poison Ivy, Karver Blue Butterfly and Five Great Lakes. A slide presentation by Shirley Purdy showcasing 10 years of The Friends of Pinery Park's occurs at 11 a.m. at the Visitor Centre. The Savanna Festival, which also honours the Canada wide. Parks Day, g Fair celebrates PiowingM ZURICH = The opening of the -annual Zurich Fair will be on July. 23 at 7:30 p.m. with a spe- cial variety show to cel- ebrate . the upcoming plowing match. This year, the opening cere- monies, variety show and Zurich Lion's Club elimination draw, dance and beef on a. bun will all be held on the ice surface. FEST tured in the vari- ety show will be some of the artists of Huron County on the "Huron County Sings" CD which was produced for IPM '99. Graeme Craig, the Huron Match's presi- dent, will open the fair and sing the song he - wrote "The Picture in Your Eyes". Artists from the CD such as Betty Beer, Eugene Hartman and others are also planning to appear. As usual, the Fair Board would like to invite local children, youth, adults or seniors to participate in the variety show. It is always a wonderful community event. A Rung nner, Mill Owner, rveyor, and 1920s bathing beauty are just a few of the ghosts that will be brought to life. On Sunday, the day begins with a hike to dis- cover Pinery's past. Join naturalist, Terry Crabe on the Heritage Trail at 9 a.m. Afterwards, see "Owls Alive" at the Visitor Centre during a presenta- tion by Ross Snider. Snider is from the Tamarack Raptor Rehabilitation Centre. Artists from the River Road Gallery will be painting along the Cedar Trail from 12-4 p.m. Take a leisurely hike around the trail and watch these talented people painting scenes of the beach, river and forest. There will also be a dis- play of prints, books and giftware by famous wildlife artist Glen Loates at the Visitor Centre all weekend.
