Ball tournament attracts hundreds. to Usborne on weekend
By Rohde Rohde
THAMES ROAD - Over the weekend. hundreds of
people from the Usborne area attended a f m alo-pitch
tournament/reunion at the Kirkton Community Park
hosted by the "Friends of Usborne" Central School
fundraisers. There was a combination of four family
teams as well as teams from ten old school sections.
Players came from as far as California to take a turn
at the plate. A former teacher of the Lumley school
house, Mrs. Mair, age 94, was able to come and throw
the first pitch for the Lumley team.
The Thames Road team should get the prize for hav-
ing the most players with close to 40 people on the ros-
ter. Some teams had mascots, cheerleaders or blow
horns.
Many friendships were rekindled. Many new Usborne
township families got to know their neighbours a little
bit better. The weather was great and good fun was
had by all. Don't hang up your gloves yet. They may do
this again in a couple of years.

Church service
Rev. Carter was in charge of the church service on
Sunday morning in Thames Road Church. The service
was based on the story of Jonah. •
The choir sang "Falling in Love with Him" accompa-
nied by organist Jean Hodgert.
Alice Cann and Anne Kernick received the offering.
Rev. Carter lit the Christ candle with the help of
Zachary Kadey.
Last week's collection for Camps Bimini and
Menesetung was $102.46 in pennies and $68.10 in
Canadian Tire money.
Life and work of the congregation
A Hymn Sing Celebration will be held on July 18 at
9:50 a.m. at Elimville. The service will begin with a
sing song at 9:50 a.m. Come early and choose your
favourite hymn from Voices United.
Vacation Bible School will be held on July 25 with the
theme "Under God's Rainbow." Registration will be at
11:30 a.m. Please bring a lunch. The program is for
ages four and up. Those under four years of age are
welcome if accompanied by a parent. Supper will be
provided at 5:30 p.m. Please pick up a registration
form from the back of the church and give it to anyone
you think would be interested. The leaders need four to
five inch glass jars with an opening big enough for a
alio lite to fit into.
From August 8 to September 6, Rev. Carter will be on
vacation and there will be no services. In case of an
emergency, contact Joan Skinner, 229-6295.
The U.C.W. will be going to Blyth Festival on
September 7 to see "Death of the Hired Hand". It is a
nostalgic play about a threshing. gang straining to win
the battle against time and the elements. The play
begins at 8 p.m. and optional supper plans are being
'arranged. This will replace the regular U.C.W.
September meeting. If you are interested, please con-
