Here's a rundown of some of the
day.'s events. Check the committee's
poster for more information:
• 7 a.m. - 11 a.m. Start the day off
right with pancakes, sausage, ham,
bacon and eggs at the Fireman's
Breakfast at the Ag. Building. Last
year 600 showed up so this time
they've added an extra hour on to the
• breakfast to accommodate the
crowds.
• 9 a.m. A Beach Volleyball tourna-
ment will be held in fr %T t of the Ag.
Building. Contact JoAnne Fields at
235-2833 for more information.
• 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. A com-
bined Classic Car
Show with Exeter's
Canadian Tire is
expecting to see 200
cars participate.
• 9-11 a.m.
Exeter Optimists
bike decorating
and -rodeo in the north parking
lot. Exeter's Canadian Tire is sup-
porting the bike rodeo and all
entrants will receive a keepsake
photo I.D.
• 9 a.m. 7 p.in. The Exeter Fair
committee and the Agricultural
Society is organizing a display of
school work, crafts and plants in the
arena. They will also be holding a pet
show at 11 a.m.
• 10 a.m. An open pairs la , ...

x.11 a.m.. The Exeter Playground
and Exeter Lioness are sponsoring a
Child Fair which will include face
painting, games and scavenger hunt.
• 1 p.m. Registration begins for
"The Maple Leaf Sensation" Soap Box
Derby. Contact the Exeter Lions at
235-1919 for more details.
• 2-3:30 p.m. A free swim will be
held at the Exeter Public Swimming
Pool.
• 5-7 . p.m. A roast beef dinner will
be held. Tickets can be bought in
advance at Seip's valu-mart, Greeting
Card World and the Exeter Legion or
by calling Wayne Shapton at 263-
2800.
• 6 p.m. Hayrides around
MacNaughton Park
• 6:30 - Dusk. The Eugene Hartr an
Family 4101kird and other local enter-
tainers will be entertaining the
crowds (The Hartmans will also be
playing from 2-4 p.m.). The scouts
and cubs will . be selling glow stick
necklaces. The legion will be donat-
ing part of the profits from the glow
stick sales back to the cubs and
scouts.
• 9 p.m. Time Capsule dedication
and ceremony at the legion. Local
dignitaries, veterans and cadets are
expected to attend the event.
EXETER - In just a few days Exeter
is going to be a buzz with a flurry of
Canada Day celebrations.
This is the eighth time the R.E.
Pooley Branch 167
Exeter Legion has
sponsored the popular
event and this year's
celebration promises to
be just as successful.
The legion's Canada
Day Celebration's com-
mittee has proclaimed
this year's festivities
Exeter's "End of the
Century Extravaganza,
Canada Day 1999" and
has scheduled .a full slate
of activities for both young and old.
The legion is also planning to com-
memorate the monumental event by
organizing a time capsule that will be
opened on July 1, 2099•ty='7±
Crafted by legion member . Norrn
Eveland, the wooden Um! capsule
measures 24 inches by 18 inches and
will include items from various ser-
vice .groups and organizations in the
area' along with contributions from
the library, town, churches and
Exeter Times -Advocate. The legion is
also planning to include a book by
Eric Heywood, detailing their legion's
history in the time chest.
"I believe this time capsule is a
legion first all across Canada," said
event co-chairman Tom Burke. "This
will live on beyond the average per-
son's lifetime."
Canada Day organizers have also
sponsored an essay writing contest
for local school children asking them
to predict what Canada will be like in
2099 as a nation. The first prize win-
ner of the essay contest will be
awarded $25 and their essay will be
enclosed in the capsule.
Exeter photographer Bart DeVries
will be contributing photographs of
present day Exeter to be included
with the time capsule. He will also be
busy taking photos during this year's
Canada Day festivities including the
Time Capsule Dedication Ceremony
at 9 p.m. During New Year's Eve fes-
tivities at the legion this year the
capsule, which is going to be stored
at the legion hall, will be briefly
opened to enclose those pictures and
then resealed permanently.
July 1 at 10 p.m. on the village's
main beach.
The cost is free, however donations
will gladly be accepted. .
The committee has also lined up
entertainment that will be provided
on the beach all day. At 6 p.m. a line-
up of bands including Lagrange, a
Tribute to ZZ Top, Voodoo Lounge, a
Rolling Stones tribute band and
Emery Street, a top 40 cover tunes
band, will entertain the crowds,

planning a parade that will leave at
10 a.m. sharp from Elm St. Park and
travel along Main St. to the Lucan
Memorial Community Centre.
At 11 a.m. behind the arena, games
and a trivia contest have been sched-
uled along with an official flag rais-
ing and cake cutting ceremony.
At dusk a fireworks display will
conclude the festivities. The event
will begin with fireworks donated by
local families and will end with a
large display sponsored by the
Canada Day committee.
