Community
Hensall volunteers recognized for their contributions
By Liz Sangster
HENSALL - In late 1996, the Village of Hensall
Parks Board was approached regarding a need to
recognize members of the community who have vol-
unteered 'above and beyond' the expected call of
duty. The Board agreed that all volunteers in the
community are of vital importance; the Village Parks
Board commends all these contributions. The
Board's challenge then became developing a means
of recognition for specific individuals.
In an. effort to keep the process simple, the Parks
Board opted to model a means of recognition closely
after that of the Town of Seaforth. It had been indi-
cated that there was much success with the volun-
teer awards there, which had been done since 1982.
To encompass all facets of volunteerism, three cat-
egories were necessary. Since 1997, the Hensall
Parks Board has acknowledged an Individual for
Service to Sports, Civic Service and Humanitarian
Service. Nominations are solicited from the commu-
nity - encouraging groups and individuals to make
acknowledgements. Hensall resident, Ken Clarke

1 ' 9 saw more nominations submitted than ever!
This was taken as a clear indication of the impor-
tance of continuing this recognition.
Steve Bedard is a resident of Hensall. He is very
actively involved in minor and adult sports - as both
a player and a respected coach. Steve has been
acknowledged as a critical element in the return of
Senior A hockey in the Village of Hensall. He is also
instrumental in the fundraising aspect of the Hensall
Braves, Minor Hockey and Sherwoods. Steve Bedard
also enjoyed five separate nominations from his
peers for this recognition. It is for. these reasons and
others, that Steve Bedard was unanimously selected
as Hensall's Sport Volunteer of the Year.
The 1999 recipient of the Civic Volunteer of the
Year is Gerry Neilands. Gerry is recognized as a 15 -
year member of the Scout Movement in the Village
of Hensall. The amount of time dedicated throughout
these 15 years is immeasurable. Of specific note
however, was not only the amount of time Gerry has
offered, but the quality of this time. "His experience,
expertise and knowledge are an asset to our organi-
zation, but it is the way that he passes this on to the
youth of our community that is impressive." Gerry
_= has also been an important part, of the development
of land for a camp facility._
Lillian Beer is acknowledged as Hensall's
Humanitarian Volunteer of the Year. For many
years, Lillian has been actively involved in the com-
munity. This includes the Board of the Hensall
United Church, the Legion Ladies Auxiliary and
Legion, and the Hensall Fair. Lillian is also a volun-
teer at the monthly Seniors' Drop In lunch. In her
`spare time' Lillian also volunteers at the Queensway
Nursing Home. She Is renembered as a dedicated
nurse at the -South Huron Hospital, and noted as an
expert baker in her `retirement.' She is responsible
for the Legion and Auxiliary desserts at functions.
Members of the ,community are asked to join, the
Parks Board as these three individuals are acknowl-
edged -for, heir. contributions in. Hensall.
Presentations will be made at Hensall's Community
