Fury tie 0-0
EXETER -- The Exeter
Fury Third Division WOSL
soccer team fought the
Strathroy Portuguese to a
0-0 tie at Community
Park at home Saturday.
Exeter had a couple of
good chances in the first
half. Chad Monteith fired
a shot that took a strange
hop into the air but the
goalkeeper managed to
get his fingertips on it to
make the save.
A few minutes later the
Fury were awarded a free
kick inside the 18 yard
box. Trevor Boersma
rocketed a low drive that
the goalie stopped. The
keeper took a few,
moments to recover from
the blast.
Tim Hundey had a nice
run up the sideline but his
teammates failed to sup-
port him, ending the
offensive threat.
Exeter had the better
scoring chances in the
second half. Strathroy
had no substitutes on the
humid day and Exeter
seemed to create more
offence because of it.
Tim Proctor had a
breakaway but failed to
get the ball past the
charging keeper. The
, Fury did score when
Jason Steinman put the
ball into the empty side of
the net but the play was
whistled offside.
Fury keeper Craig
Winbow made some big
saves to earn his second
straight shutout.
The Fury have a record
of 1-3-1 in the West
Division. Their next action
is Saturday at London
Morningstar.
Who's there first?

New bench boss for the Jr. D Hawks

penalized," Friyia said. "I
don't plan on killing bad
penalties."
He said he would take
his discipline mantra as
far as sitting good players
for taking unnecessary
penalties.
Friyia is bringing in
Tony Manderelli as one of
two assistant coaches.
Manderelli's '97/98 `AA'
bantam team won the all -
Ontario title and has won
a number of Alliance
championships.
-'. Weil and. I are keit"
much on the same page,"
Friyia said.
Back in the fold is for-
mer assistant coach Dean
Scliram who helped
coach the '97/98 Hawks
to the all -Ontario champi-
onship final (Exeter lost to
Wellesley) under head
coach Dave Revington.
Friyia is aiming for the
Hawks to make the play-
offs this season and to
compete for top spot and
the all -Ontario champi-
onship next year.
"My goal is to head
down Main St. in Exeter
with a bunch of kids on a
flatbed truck," he said. "1'
have an all -Ontario ring
on my finger and I want a
bigger one."
Friyia met with the
Hawks executive. Monday
to plan recruitment and
put a yearly plan togeth-
er.
Hawks president Tom
McCann is happy in his
choice of Friyia.
"I think he's goingto
obviously bring some
enthusiasm," he said.
McCann admitted the
executive looked at get-
ting someone with junior
hockey coaching experi-
ence but the pickings
were slim with five other
Jr. D teams looking for
coaches. He said having
Schram back as an assis-
tant will help out on the
experience side.
On the plus side, Friyia.
has lots of experience
working with
bantam/midget age play-
ers which will work out
well since the Hawks will
be a young team this sea-
son.
McCann said there may
be two years of rebuilding
left to do after the suc-
cessful teams between
'95/96 and '97/98. He said
the next two or three
years will be "lean"
because Exeter Minor
Hockey didn't ice a ban-
tam team last season.
"Two years down the
road we will be pretty
sparse," McCann said.
The executive will look
to minor hockey systems
in surrounding areas to•
help bolster the Hawks
lineup. Friyia may also be
able to attract some
London talent.
On a sad note, McCann.,
and Hawks vice-president
Bill Farquhar are making
this season their last.
McCann has racked up 10
years with the Hawks, the
last seven as president. '
Farquhar has also served
for seven years.
"We need new blood,"
McCann said; adding he
may stick around as a
past -president if needed.
"We're not going to walk
away from it unless it will
be in good hands. I'm not
going to abandon the
club."
