The primary breeds are Holstein (comprising more than 85% of Canadian dairy herds), Ayrshire, Jersey, Brown Swiss, Canadienne, Guernsey, and Shorthorn. * Based on official records for all breeds in, 1997, the average production of cows enrolled in milk recording programs reached an impressive level of 8,427 kilograms of milk in 305 days oflactation with a protein content of 3.24% and a butterfat content of 3,72%.
