Times Advocate, 1999-06-02, Page 13Wednesday, June 2, 1999 Exeter Time, -Advocate South Huron's Senior Chir brings home a bronze EXETER - On May 20 the Senior Concert Choir from South Huron District High School participated in the 27th annual MusicFest Canada on the York Campus in Toronto. The choir which is directed by Ruth Hardy Claessens, performed four pieces: Cantique de Jean Racine by Gabriel Faure, Danny Boy arranged by Joseph Flummerfelt, an African .folksong, Jabula Jesu arranged by Barbara Baker and a traditional Gospel song, The Storm is Passing Over arranged by Stephen .Hatfield. The choir was r :# awarded a Bronze Medal Standing by acjjudicators Marc Hafso of Alberta and Brainerd: Blyden-Taylor and Leet Willingham, both of Toronto. -- Marcy Swance skillfully accompanied the choir bothon the piano 'and .the con- gas. Lacretia Pfaff was presented an award for her outstanding contributions towards the management of the 'choir. After the performance, the students had the pleasure of working with clini- cian 'cian Lee •Willingham who is responsible for Music Education at the Ontario. Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. He told: the choir he was impressed with their ability, to change styles so easily from one piece to the next. He felt that the tuning and blend was especially good in the soft sectio of the music. He stressed the importance of communicating the meaning of the text in choral singing and encouraged the singers to connect themselves more completely to the text. In addition to attending other school groups' performances, the singers attended professional performances each evening. On Thursday evening the choir attended a phenomenal concert by the Nathaniel Dett Chorale which is directed by Brainerd Blyden-Taylor. This chorale is the first professional chamber choir in Canada that dedicated to performing Alrocentric choral music. This group performed at Skydomef)$. • • for .South African President Nelson Mandela during his visit to Canada. After receiving an enthusiastic standing ovation from the large audi- ence, the chorale surprised: the audi- ence with an encore in which they were joined on stage by jazz pianist, Joe Sealy. One of the singers from the chorale informed the student audience that he was inspired to pursue profes- sional singing because of his involve- ment in his high school choir and his MusicFest experiences. The choirs from Sot th Huron will be performing a final choral concert on June 10 at 7:30 p.m. The place will be announced later. Everyone finds it an easy and convenient way to shop and not as tiring as travelling to the larger centres. Shirley Luther led the worship service on May 18 and Winnie Hutton, Pastoral Care Volunteer, officiated at Queensway's church service on May 25. Belva Fuss was organist for both services. Monk, a reporter with the, TimerAdvocate. Her topic was, the International Plowing Match, as she is a mem- ber of the Special eVents Committee. As site maps were handed out, Monk stressed that there really is something for everyone at the Match. - Marian Dougall gave a • report on the South Huron District Annual held recently in Crediton, where June HodgRon was the guest speaker. ' - A Tweedsmuir . work-' shop will be held August 6. .Plans for the June meet- ing include a trip to the Huron Country Playhouse to see `Anything Goes'. Smith entertained in the lounge on ;,Friendship • r-fday; May -21. They payed a great selection of songs as well as many requests. Residents sang along with many tunes and especially enjoyed the harmonica numbers. Following Senior Diners on May 27, several resi- dents played games of Euchre, Crokinole, Scrabble and 21. Volunteers Betty Simmons and Marg Cole provided assistance. Residents are making use of the Tuck and Library Cart which Auxiliary volunteers cir- culate each Wednesday afternoon. There is an excellent selection of books and magazines as well as a, good supply of toiletries and stationery. Queensway took part in the Hensall Community Yard Sale again this year and was very pleased with the number of peo- ple who patronized the booth. Tickets are available for Queensway's Annual Strawberry Social fundraiser for the .Huron. County Alzheimer Society.
