and a traditional Gospel song, The
Storm is Passing Over arranged by
Stephen .Hatfield. The choir was r :#
awarded a Bronze Medal

award for her outstanding contributions
towards the management of the 'choir.
After the performance, the students
had the pleasure of working with clini-
cian
'cian Lee •Willingham who is responsible
for Music Education at the Ontario.
Institute for Studies in Education at the
University of Toronto. He told: the choir
he was impressed with their ability, to
change styles so easily from one piece to
the next. He felt that the tuning and
blend was especially good in the soft
sectio of the music. He stressed the
importance of communicating the
meaning of the text in choral singing
and encouraged the singers to connect
themselves more completely to the text.
In addition to attending other school
groups' performances, the singers
attended professional performances
each evening. On Thursday evening the
choir attended a phenomenal concert by
the Nathaniel Dett Chorale which is
directed by Brainerd Blyden-Taylor.
This chorale is the first professional
chamber choir in Canada that
dedicated to performing
Alrocentric choral music. This
group performed at Skydomef)$.
• • for .South African President
Nelson Mandela during his visit to
Canada. After receiving an enthusiastic
standing ovation from the large audi-
ence, the chorale surprised: the audi-
ence with an encore in which they were
joined on stage by jazz pianist, Joe
Sealy. One of the singers from the
chorale informed the student audience
that he was inspired to pursue profes-
sional singing because of his involve-
ment in his high school choir and his
MusicFest experiences.
The choirs from Sot th Huron will be
performing a final choral concert on
June 10 at 7:30 p.m. The place will be
announced later.
