HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes Advocate, 1999-06-02, Page 1212 Exeter Times -Advocate Wednesday, June 2, 1999 Children of Chernobyl funds The Exeter Lions Club outgoing president Cliff Marsden, left, and incoming presi- dent John Hanson present a $3,000 cheque to John Martene of the Huron County Group of the Canadian Relief for Chernobyl Victims in Belarus.The Exeter Lions Club is the program's single largest supporter.The group is still $3,000 short of its goal for this year's program and is hoping two ball tourna- ments and a letter -writing program will raise the needed funds. Seventeen chil- dren from Belarus will arrive in the county on June 27 and stay with their host families until Aug. 13. Susan Gilmour to star in `Anything Goes' GRAND BEND - Huron Country Playhouse is proud to announce that musical theatre star, Susan Gilmour, will be joining the cast of Anything Goes. Ms. Gilmour will be playing the role of Reno Sweeney, the ex -evan- gelist who takes the show into the heavens with such songs as "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" and "Anything Goes". Rehearsals for the pro- duction have begun, with the curtain rising on June 15 at 8 p.m. Edmonton -born Susan Gilmour is one of Canada's most accom- plished musical theatre , artists. Beginning with her own band, she per- formed in musical styles, from rock to country with equal suc- cess. She performed for Canada's peace Keeping Forces in the Middle East, has sung on countless album project and radio jin- gles, and has been fea- tured on many televi-• sion specials including three seasons on the CTV series Sun Country with Ian Tyson. Wanting to expand her career, Gilmour began training with Edmonton Musical Theatre. From there it was on to New York City_ and a scholarship for two years of inten- sive study at - the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Upon graduation, she returned to Canada to play the role of Fantine in Les Miserables at Toronto's Royal Alexander Theatre for 2 1/2 years and on the First National Canadian Tour. Gilmour went on to appear in this role on Broadway, and in Los Angeles, where she received a Robby Award nomination for best supporting actress. In 1996, Gilmour was invited to. play Fantine in the International Touring Co. of Les Miserables on a 10 month tour to Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul King and Cape Town South Africa. Susan Gilmour has also starred in highly acclaimed productions of Man of La Mancha, as Adonza/Dulcinea; in Oliver! as Nancy; in Chess in Concert, as Florence; xthe Live Ent. Toronto production of Kiss of Spiderwoman, Directed by Hal Prince; plus many other theatre credits. Gilmour appeared as a special guest, along with Ofra Harnoy and Loreena McKennitt, on her husband's Gemini Award winning CBC special Michael Burgess Live at Massey Hall. Susan Gilmour reprised her role as Fantine in Les Miserables at the Princess of Whales Theatre in Toronto this past fall, with Colm Wilkinson. Name Weekly dinners enjoyed by seniors EXETER - Good fel- lowship, good food and good entertainment were enjoyed by Exeter Dining for Seniors who attended the weekly dinners. Dinner music on the keyboard was provided by Jean Hodgert, Josie Ryckman and Wilma Davis. Cards were signed for Alan Buswell, Maxine Sereda, Marie Bugyra, Shimmy Snell, Joan McCann, Harry and Marion Dougall. Lucky draw prize win- ners during the month of May were: Shirley Snell, Bill Smits, Joe Wilds, Martin Andrews, Humphrey Arthur, Doris Edwards, Doris Denham, Leona Morley, Joan McCann, Marie Bugyra and An deRijk. Birthday or anniver- sary greetings were sung to Martin Andrews, Jean Estey, Kay Green, Ruth Skinner, Estelle Chalmers and Joan McCann. Entertainment was varied, informative and enjoyable. Faye Blair - Skinner read a poem about mothers. She also gave information concerning a bank scam that had taken place recently in Clinton. A sing song of old favourites was enjoyed. The Riverview Ramblers entertained with line dancing. Mary Jane McDougall from the Exeter Villa con- ducted a survey con- cerning the need for apartment living with dining facilities, med- ical help and supervi- sion. Lorne MacKenzie entertained with old favourite songs accom- panying himself on the keyboard. A representative from Shoreline Health Co. of Clinton, showed many medical supplies and equipment. The compa- ny offers services such as rental equipment, repairs, adjustments and special orders as well as quality prod- ucts. If requested, an assistant will come to assess your needs and delivery will be made throughout the area. A bulletin board was donated for senior notices. A foot care clinic is held the first Tuesday of the month at the Lion's Youth Centre. Phone 235- 0258 for an appoint- ment. Studies in Denmark found a direct correlation between the amount of alcohol consumed and the chances of conception. PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) causes severe and debilitating symptoms in 5-10% of women. About 30-40% of women report moderate symptoms. Some non-presdription treatment of this very real problem includes .Vitamin B6 (100mg/day increas- ing to 200 mg daily if needed), and Oil of Evening-& 'primrose has been used with mixed results.
