First grad formal for St.Anne's
BY Philip McMillan
It has been two weeks
since 1 wrote this article
and much has happened
at the school in those
two weeks. I did not
write with the holiday
weekend and the week
before I was unable to
write on the weekend
due to prior commit-
ments. The weeks were
not uneventful with
OSAID one week and
the AMNESTY week the
next. There is no ques-
tion that the issues in
global politics need us
to take stock of how
precious our democratic
practice actually is .
The students at St.
Anne's elected a new
student cabinet this
week. I watched as all
candidates won. They
all went to the micro-
phone before their
peers and shared why.
they wanted to make a
difference. I was
touched by their sincer-
ity and their need, not
to win a popularity con-
test, but to be allowed
to lead and serve in one
action. I was so proud
to see such a range of
student groups repre-
sented before us and to
hear how well they said
why they were up to the
job. In the end not all
won the position.
However, we all won
the minute students
said ,"I can do that ..."
and accepted their
nomination.

I could not help but
see the parallel to our
current provincial elec-
tions. Students, 18
years of age, were
called to an election
readiness meeting by
Mr. Sottanna. Mr.
Sottanna explained how
to be sure to get on the
voting list if students
were eligible and in an
non-partisan way
reminded our older stu-
dents, new members of
the electorate, how vital
a role each person plays
in the casting of their
ballot.
This week, we elect
our provincial govern-
ment and all who can
must return to their
balloting station to
VOTE. I watched as
students in the lobby,
during AMNESTY week,
were told of human
rights violations around
the world. We can't
imagine in Ontario of a
state that takes oppo-
nents and imprisons
and tortures them. We
take what we have for
granted as we watch
refugees carry refugees
across manmade bor-
ders that mark a line
where one is either free
or punishable.
The OSAID students,
and Ms. Hamilton and
Ms.Chwieczak, have
worked hard to remind
students and staff about
the perils of impaired
driving. A very special
thank you to Clere Vu
Auto Towing for making
it possible to display an
auto wreck on our front
lawns. There is no
question that it created
a powerful reminder to
all of the peril of
impaired driving.
This week we are on a
countdown to our very
first Grad Formal,
Saturday, June 5th. A
catered dinner will be
served and a dance wilt
follow as we begin a
month long process
which will lead from a
Grad Formal to a Grad
Mass celebrated for all
grads Sunday, June
27th. Then on
Wednesday, June 30th
we will host our first
Commencement: Staff
and students will
process in and by the
end of the evening we
will have applauded the
first graduation class of
St. Anne's Catholic
Secondary. School. I
know already that this
will be a wonderful,
emotional and all too
fast month .'
