The president of the Ausable Centre's board appeared before council to try to have them re- verse a decision refusing the centre permission to use the former Village of Lucan municipal office, which Lucan Biddulph plans to sell. The Ausable Centre's plan is to lease the build- ing for five years at $1 per year, and put $50,000 into the building in renovations. Since council is plan- ning to sell the building for $60,000 (which McI- nerney estimated would be approximately $54,000 after fees) it would be better off to let the Ausable Centre use it and renovate it for five years and then sell it at a higher price, McInerney argued. The centre's plans for the village office include a private office for the executive director, coun- selling offices, a meeting room and a distance ed- ucation area whichthe centre would run in con- junction with Fanshawe and Westervelt colleges. He, said these services will ensure residents can stay in Lucan (or certain education programs without having to go to London. So far, the Ausable Centre has put $290;000 into the community in the past year and has ap- plied for a $375,000 grant from the Trillium Foundation. He said eventually the centre will be re- sponsible for $640,000 in capital investment into the community, adding that he would like coun- cil to recognize the sup- port the centre has shown for the area. According to McIner- ney, attendance at the centre will soon exceed 1,000 visitors per month. He added that the centre has had 1,000. visitors who claim they have nev- er stopped in the village before. Deputy -Reeve Bob Benner later asked McInerney to sub- stantiate that claim. Coun. Leroy Maguire asked McInerney why the Ausable Centre sim- ply doesn't buy the for- mer village office now with • its government funding, but McInerney said the funding doesn't allow them to spend their money that way. He did say, though, that he hoped the Aus- able Centre would be in a position to buy the building or talk about a "true lease" after its five- year, $1 per year is up. Deputy -Reeve Bob Ben- ner asked McInerney if the centre's funding will be in jeopardy if council doesn't give it per- mission to use the build- ing. McInerney said a re- fusal wouldn't jeopardize funding, but the centre's chances for funding will be stronger with a com- mitment from council. Coun.
