Public School and South Huron District High School the lines of mmmu- nication are opening. After watching short dramatic presentations on a wide variety of addictions staged by a SHDHS Gr. 11 drama class on May 3, stu- dents at Exeter P.S. responded. Students in Gr. 8 wrote poetry about the effects of addiction. 'The poetry writing is in response to the pre- sentations," says Exeter Public School princi- pal Rick Graham. Below is a small sampling of some of the poetry. That Night Daddy, I wish that you were with me now, To hold me on your lap and tell me that every- thing will be fine, Because everything will not be fine. I made a mistake, went against all you have taught, I drank, and I drank a lot I knew it was wrong but As I was leaving, heading home, I was all over the road. I wasn't paying attention, I don't think I could. I swerved out in front of a car, Daddy, I killed someone. It's not your fault, There was nothing you could do. You taught me not to drink and drive, But I, I chose to. I want to push the rewind button, And erase all I have done. But, the problem is, I can't. I'm feeling guilty now, My heart is beating out of my chest I don'tkjiow he -N I could do such a thing, But, I did. Daddy, I was wondering, Can you forgive me? By Bethany Wagler Grade 8, EPS tnnocert Decisions come into place. You have to decide. Red or blue? Should I stay or should it go? Which friends, the truthful, or the popular? Ecstasy or pop? Whatever you chose, the innocent will face the consequences The innocent friends, family, people you do not even know, will be in the path of your decision. Will they receive a gift from your decision, or will they pay? You're on the road. Either you get lucky, or you crash. Who it is going to be? Are you going to be the one who's responsible for their death, Or are they the drunks who hit you? Do you hit them, or do they hit you? Who will it be? What will you choose? Will they be drunk, or will you? Who will live playing the horror in their minds over and over again, and be responsible for the tears of the family of the dead? Will you be innocent? By Beth Hundry Grade 8 - EPS The Party To be the life of the party. People feel popularity, friends and family Are the most important things. The life of the party are the people, Who have none of these things, They have stupidness, innocence, and thrill` For just one night. One night could change everything. -u You could have the thrill for just one night, But the next day you could be hurt, Or even dead. The horror you would feel If you killed your best friend for only, what? To be the life of the party. By Lori Hogan Grade 8 - EPS Theme I reminisce. My mind travels back to that fateful night. J.: It is funny now darkness falls so subtly. It seemed at the time like nothing could be wrong in the world. How innocence deserts you so quickly When all you want is to be popular. I recall that ominous day before my world came crashing down, The weather was deceivingly beautifil. There was to be a major party that the follow- ing night, And I had received an invitation. An invitations to doom. The day came and went, Quiet and quick, The next day a clone of the last, But finally the sun, It started to set. The last night of my free life had dawned. The house seemed to vibrate with music I got caught up in the excitement and fun, I felt myself get carried away in the insanity Of the vodka slamrn.ing into be brain. Through glazed eyes I glanced at the clock My mind desperately urged me to leave, But I was having too much ftin that night Making impressions Showing people the real me. Hour after hour Hit after hit I was falling into a deep, dark void I was living in ecstasy at the party that night, Empowered by the drugs that sent my mind whirling And distorted my thoughts., So when the time came That I had to leave, No one could stand in my way I took up my car keys against strong objection And drove away into the night. I was proud of my first impressions, Stupid as they may have been But my mind was still clouded with alcohol So I was delusional, you see. I was startled alert by the headlights Just in time to feel the crash I felt my body hit the windshield Then everything went black. I didn't mean to kill them, Father I was just trying to have some fun I really don't think that this could happen to me - Obviously I was wrong. So now I find myself lying here alone Under these crlspi< white hospital sheets Wishing that 1 could change the past And make everything right again.
