Kenpal becomes HACCPcertified supplier
CENTRALIA — Kenpal
Farms Inc. has become
the first supplier of live-
stock nutrients in Canada
to receive Hazard
Analysis Critical Control.
Point (HACCP) certifica-
tion.
Family-owned Kenpal of
Centralia in Huron County
has been supplying cus-
tomized priMbces, tion research .and man-
agement planning ser-
vices to beef, dairy and
pork producers across
Ontario since 1983. •
Originally developed to
} protect the American food
supply, HACCP is an inter-
nationally -recognized set
of protocols for preventing
feed product contamina-
tion
ontamina tion by chemical, biologi-
cal, and physical agents at;
every stage of the manu-
facturing and delivery
process. It emphasizes
hazard analysis, critical
limits, preventionlcorrec-
tion, and exhaustive rou-
tine monitoring which
generates documentation
inspected annually then
closely audited every.
three years to decide re-
certification.
"We were ready to be
certified last year but the
government had no
trained, auditors in place,"
said Plant Manager Jim
Denomme, in charge of
getting Kenpal HACCP.
audit -ready. "Finally we
got the go-ahead to use
SGS (The world's largest
inspection and certifica-
tion firm) and they
`checked us out thoroughly
in mid-April. They really
opened my eyes to the
importance: of treating
animal feed like human
food with, regard to poten-
tial contamination."
Denomme estimates two
years of certification prep
has cost Kenpal in excess
of $100,000, mainly for
structural/procedural and
administrative tweaking
of plant operations and
training/testing more than
46 employees.
"We couldn't have done
It without a constant
stream of feedback from
the floor because you're
trying to adopt and adapt
principles without sacri-
ficing existing efficient
systems - every situation
is unique," he said.
The Canadian Feed
Industry Association, of
which Kenpal is a inem-
ber, issues the actual
HACCP certificate with an
SGS seal. The association
planted the HACCP seed
nearly four years ago with
its Feed Safety
Accreditation Program,
after which the Business
Development Corporation
provided Kenpal with
advice on areas of con-
. centration, internal appli-
cation, and paperwork.
A press release from
Kenpal states that until
recently, governments
and trade organizations
such as NAFTA and the
WTO did little more than
pay lip service to the
virtues of HACCP. Now it's
law for domestic food
processors' in the U.S.
where certain food
imports must also bear
the. HACCP stamp. None
sof Kenpal's competitors
and almost none of its
supplies are HACCP-certi-
fied, mainly .because com-
pliance in livestock feed
continues to be voluntary
and market-driven in
North America, according
to Kenpal. .
"More and :More pro-
ducers are demanding
HACCP-certified feed
products because packers
and processors have
been, pressing the issue,"
according to Kenpal quali-
ty
ualmty control chief Alan Ford.
"We're confident certifica-
tion will incrsales:"
In fact, Kenpal founder
and president Kenneth
Palen reports that pre-
certification sales were up
55„rcent over two years
ago.
"Our quality c trot✓ rat-
ing from Ag` Iculture
Canada has always been
Triple -A. I guess there
must be . some contented
livestock out, there provid
ing good word-of-mouth,”
he joked.

of such bio -hazards as

Ginko alive and well
Former Town of Exeter employee Bill Hirtzel (cen-
tre), is recognized with a plaque at the ginko tree
(behind the men)-: he transplanted in '94 when the
Scenic Gardens were developed. John Stephens (left)
and Ted jones,'who` coordinated the MacNaughton
Park project, said the tree is alive today thanks to
the "tender loving care" Hirtzel showed by watering
the large tree each weekend. The ginko, a Carolinian
species, is coming out in leaf again this spring.
ria and ensure that pre-
mix components are
strictly identified by lot,
measures, and logged.
"It's important to us and
our customers that we're
able to trace a product
back through its manufac-
turing stages to its con-
stituent ingredients,"
explained Ford. "HACCP
record-keeping allows us
to 4o that."Ensuring food safety
from 'farm -to -fork' is crit-
ical. Sometimes just a
false perception of a prob-
lem with food can destabi-
lize a sector of the live-
stock industry and destroy
markets, ruining the
livelihoods of farmers pro-
ducing these products.
HACCP offers a quick and
reliable methodology for
isolating a problem and
determining its scope. So
because it's an incredibly
powerful diagnostic tool,
it's a potent consumer
public relations one as
well because it demon-
strates our' commitment
to food safety," Ford,
added.
Kenpal,is planning a'
mailing to inform cus-
tomers of its recent
accreditation.
