The flmes Advocate would like to share with you ZURICH COUGAR NEWS bur caterpillars have arrived! The Early Years Bear Classsare observing live caterpillars growing, soon they will turn into cocoons. After that we hope they will emerge as butterflies. Each day we are drawing and writing about them. We gave them names and the caterpillars are gating their green food and growing Our class. made clocks and are learning to tell time to the hour. Next week -we will visit the Literacy Festival in Clinton. More buggy news next time! k -4` ' ' t > st` ` `. Mrs. Weigand's ' Early Years Class enjoyed all the pets that visited with us. We are now talking about "Bugs" and anxiously watching our "Painted Lady Butterfly" larvae go through metamorphisis. :Grade 1 has had a busy month! We have been authors and are writing lots of stories. The children . also take turns reading their favourite books to the class. Next week our class will be hearing lots of stories at the Literacy Festival. We hope that our mothers are enjoying the marigolds that we plant- ed and gave to them for Mother's Day. They should be growing bigger by now! Grade one has also been having fun doing farm activities as we turn our thoughts to the International Plowing Match. Our room is getting quite a col- lection of tractors, fences, animals and other farm machinery. Robert Allsopp was chosen as grade 2/3's Cougar of the Month for May. He was delighted to receive a voucher for _a free Pizza from New Orleans Pizza. Rebecca Ryckman brought in a beautiful woven shawl to illustrate some of the weaving work the students have been doing in class. The patterns and textures in the classroom weavings have been lovely. Well done class. The grade three class has been preparing, and now is doing the provincial tests. The grade four's have been learning about the proper way to compost as they prepare to plant our Earth Friendly Garden. We are preparing a mass mailing to our penpals out west. Mr. Brock's grade 5/6 class have been extremely busy throughout the month of May. We attended Science Quest in Exeter and were impressed by many of the displays. The favourite part of the day, hands down, was making Slime. Thanks again to our student leaders. Our grade 6's have completed their rig- orous testing, and while they were completing it, the grade 5's worked on an Autobiography project and also finished planting our Earth Friendly Garden. We had a BBQ to . celebrate the end of testing and the arrival of Summer, and are looking forward to the Family Literacy Festival in Clinton next week. The musical, "Groovy" was awesome. We had a stellar performance._ We rocked the nation! The grade 7's are looking forward to Camp Sylvan and a rugged outdoor experience. The grade 8 class has finished performing "Groovy", the 60's musical. To top off the performance, the grade 8 students painted a 1960's Volkswagon van after dividing themselves into groups to cover a particular part of it. Groups painted both sides, the front, back and one group even did the roof! The designs varied from night to day, to vines and symbols, to suns and flowers, and even handprints. Four grade 8 students wrote the Gauss Math Contest this year. It is a very challenging multiple choice test and you would need a pretty good math grade to take it. Camp Sylvan is an educational Science camp that teaches you orienteering, pond study and survival. If one group misbehaves somehow, they get to do all the cleanup chores. The grade 7 and 8 students are going to Camp Sylvan on May 26 until the 28th. MCCURDY SCHOOL NEWS • Grades 68 students are studying etre substances and solvents. Geogrpphy • The grade 4/5 class are presently studying Egypt. **The grade 6/7 are finishing a unit on Japan and will begin working on indi- vidual countries that are Canadian trading partners. MCGILLIVRAY CENTRAL SCHOOL, May has been , ' isy month for McGillivray. Grade 3 and 6 are in the midst of their provinc 'e testing. This testing costs the government 15 million dollars to do ear. M the top ,..4th students in grade 7 and 8 wrote the GAUSS test. This test is not mandatory but it shows the progress your students are making in your school. On Monday, May 10th McGillivray had their school track and field meet. There was an excellent turn -out. All students showed great sportsmanship. The top three from each event will go on to the area meet at North Middlesex District High School on May 26th. The raindate is May 27th. All students who will not be participating in the area meet will have a "play day" at McGillivray all day. Education week was a great success. All the gymnastics participants showed their gymnastic routines in front of the school. These students also went to a gymnastics meet at Lucan on April 20th. ,The students are congratulated on their fine performances. We brought home many gold, as- well as, silver and bronze medals. Thanks to Miss Blauuboer, Mrs. Truchon and Mrs. Vandaele for taking their time -and effort to coach these students. We also had a science fair in our gym for students of grades: =6-8. There was- a wide range of projects and they were very well done. Grade 611 students just finished a V.I.P. (Values, Influences, Peers) program with Constable Veenstra. Recently, grades 7 and 8's were involved in a CPR and First Aid course with Constable Graham. They learned a. variety: of life- saving skills which they hopefully will never have to use. We thanked Constable Graham for his time and patience given to the students. Field trips for the end of the year are being scheduled. Finally, preparation is underway for the 40th anniversary- of the school, with activities and a *gather- ing for past students on June 19th. Tickets for dinner are still available. May is a busy month at McCurdy School. There is a long list of activities the students are involved with. Bus safety • Kindergarten class practised their bus safety on May 13. Assessments • The grade 3 students are working hard on the EQAO test "See the Changes". • Three grade 6 students are working hard at their provincial assessment called "Perspectives". • The grade 7 and 8 students are working on the board administered Math Mastery tests. • The Grade 7 and 8 students have taken the Guass math test as an extra challenge. = Track and field • The school is preparing for the school wide Track and Field event on Wednesday May 26. • The regional tack and field day is scheduled for June 3. On this day McCurdy school will be holding their play day for the students who are not competing in the regional events. • Special events are also planned at the regional track and field meet. Safe Kids Week • May 31 to June 4 is Safe Kids week across Canada. McCurdy school will be involved in a variety of activities to promote life long safety. This includes bicy- cle safety and sun safety for the students as well as car seat safety, and com- munity awareness for parents. • Grades 4 - 8 will be involved in a water safety program at Vanastra Pool. • The Grade 7 and 8 girls are participating in a weikshop called "Health Relationships". r Music ; . • Grade 2-3 have studied instrument design and construction. • Two high school students are coming to the class to assist with music, instruction with the Grade 4/5. Science • The grade 1-3 students are working on studying plant life. This includes one class trip to a local green house. • The grade 2/3 class are working on an Earth Friendly Garden with the community of Huron Park. • The grade 4/5 class is presently studying weather. • Grades . 6-8 went to the high school with projects for. Science .Quest. • • • On May 14, Gr. 7 students from Stephen Central Public School presented a reworked version of a classic nursery rhyme entitled "Mother Goose's Goose is Loose".The actors are: back row (1-r) Cory King, Sabrina Brand; second row (1-r) Angie Dearing,Amber Preszcator, Sarah Parker, Maegan Kipfer; front row (1-r) Dan Dykeman, Marco Roduner, Meghan O'Rourke and Shawn Marshall.
