EXETER -- South Huron District High School's
population increased by about a 1,000 students
on Thursday for Science Quest '99.

Those 1,000 Gr. 4-8 students in 41 classes were
from 16 Avon Maitland District School Board and
Huron -Perth Catholic District School Board
schools from throughout Huron -Perth.
Organizer George McEwan said the day of chem-
istry experiments, interactive displays and
Science Olympics -type events is meant to get ele-
mentary students excited about high school sci-
ence. Science Quest also shows elementary stu-
dents what high schools have to offer in their sci-
ence departments.
SHDHS senior science students ran much of the
day's events including the three Science Olympics
events -- the Egg -citing Launch, the Toothpick
Bridge and the Better Mousetrap. Elementary
school students entered their inventions for the
4p
Olympics.
The Egg -citing Launch had students build cata-
pults that could launch eggs the farthest without
breaking them. Students built toothpick bridges to
be tested to see how much weight they could sus-
tain. And the Better Mousetrap had students build
contraptions that slowed the movement of a mar-
ble from a certain height to the ground.
The interactive displays included bat house
making, an archeology sand pit where bones and
other artifacts were buried for students to find
plus a few other fun activities.
The most popular of the experiments in the
chemistry labs was making slime
McEwan said this is the sixth year SHDHS has
put on Science Quest. The Quest took a year off a
few years ago when the school was changing from
a term to a semester system.
