As part of its $5 million national campaign to find a cure for diabetes, Shoppers Drug Mart stores are selling paper "sneakers" for a loonie each to be signed and dis- played on store walls and windows. The full pro- ceeds will be donated to JDF, the Diabetes Research Foundation, to fund Canadian diabetes research and treatment Caven P.C.W.meet EXETER - A meeting of Caven P.C.W. was held May 10 at 1:30 pm. Mabel Stanlake and June Dougherty served lunch. President Lil McLellan gave a reading on Mother's Day. A reading was given . on a movement began in the early 1800's by Frederic Ozanam and a group of law students who formed a group to help the needy. Today it is known throughout the world as "The Society of St. Vincent de Paul". The„devotionat entitled Feeding Canada's Kids was given by Jean Easton and Maureen Wood. The group learned of Flora House In Winnipeg, Evangel Hall in Toronto and Dayspring Community Garden in London. These places are sponsored by Presbyterian Churches and W.M.S. Juvenile diabetes, also known as Type 1 or insulin-dependent dia- betes mellitus, is a leading cause in Canada of death through disease, the pri- mary cause of new adult blindness and a prominent contributing factor toward kidney disease, heart dis- ease, stroke, gangrene and nerve damage. Insulin, discovered by Canadians Dr. Frederick Banting and his medical assistant Charles Best, is a treatment, not a cure. Only through research can the cure be found. Upcoming events at the Exeter Shoppers Drug Mart include: May 21, bar- becue and sidewalk sale for JDF; May 27, Seniors Day, bake sale for JDF; June 6, Walk for the Cure. See store for details. "With its annual Sneaker Sale, Shoppers Drug Mart gives practically every Canadian the chance to get involved in supporting leading-edge research toward finding a cure for this terrible disease," says JDF national board mem- ber Alan Patt. "I truly hope that more people than ever before will take advantage of this impor- tant opportunity." Last year, the public supported the Shoppers Drug Mart Sneaker Sale and Shoppers Walk for the Cure to the tune of more than $4.4 million with $1 million coming from the Sneaker Sale alone. This year's goal of $5 million can only be reached with an even greater show of commitment and concern by Canadians. To purchase a "sneaker" and help stamp out dia- betes, simply visit any Shoppers Drug Mart from now to June 5. When signed and displayed, your "sneaker" will truly be one In a million. ST.
