HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes Advocate, 1999-05-19, Page 13Wednesday, May 19, 1999 Exeter Times' -Advocate 13 Blue Water residents take tour throu ZURICH - On May. 10 the residents of Blue Water Rest Home board- ed the wheelchair bus, under the direction of volunteer driver Glen Thiel, for a trip into the country. Residents Elda Wagner, Carman Lovie, Stewart Thiel, Jim Parkins, Clara Hamilton, Ethel Moore, Dorothy Farrell, Margaret Hess and Pearl Miller visited HoIniesville and Varna and watched the farmers labouring in the fields planting the season's crops. The men's group, led by Ann McBride, dis- cussed cars over the years. Stewart Thiel,. Jim Parkins, Carman Lovie, Ralph Farrell and Neil Mustard viewed prints of various makes over the years, read articles from the 1900's, discussed the physical and mechanical changes in vehicles over the years and shared 'with each other the advantages and disad- vantages of the various makes they purchased during their career. Teddy bears of all sizes and colours were at :the afternoon tea with rest- dents on Wednesday. Some staff and residents • brought their favourite stuffed animal instead of a teddy bear. Homemade and teddy bear graham cookies were served with refreshments by Adjuvant Cathy Shantz and Ann McBride. Everyone told their favourite bear story. Thursday afternoon chapel service was con- ducted by Rev. Pirie Mitchell, Hensall United Church, with the assis- tance of Belva Fuss as organist. This was Rev. Mitchell's first service with the residents, hav- ing just recently been appointed the minister for the Hensall commu- nity. Fr. Matthias Wronski, St. Boniface Church, Zurich led the Catholic service. Thursday evening Max Ducharme`. and The Townliners entertained the residents with old time . musical tune*. Phyllis . Deichert as pianist, George Mathonia on accordion, Ducharme on violin and Mozart Gelinas on guitar had most residents toe tap- ping and swaying to the music while others pre- ferred the dance floor to struck their stuff. Auxiliary volunteers Mary (Curtis) Gingerich and Maria Mathonia assisted with the serving of the evening's refresh- ments. Organist Art Coker played many tunes ,for the residents' s Friday afternoon. The Saturday afternoon movie "Her Majesty —Mrs. Brown" was shown depicting the history of Queen Victoria, In the evening the Highbury Gospel Hall singers from London and area sang gospel music for the residents. Residents attending Sunday morning service at Zurich Mennonite Church were Neil Mustard, Clara Hamilton, Marie Gingerich and Philippa Steckle. Residents watched a church ser- vice on the large screen in the auditorium.
