Exeter sewage system upgrade
paves way for future growth
By Craig Bradford
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER --- It may be
stinky stuff, but the
Exeter sewage system
upgrade/expansion
means big things for the
town's future.
The $4,755,691 project
will increase the sewage
system's capacity to han-
dle the waste from 7,200
people plus added indus-
trial and commercial
development.
The work. will also
address overloading
problems at the Exeter
and Huron Park sewage
pumping facilities that
have leaked, raw sewage
• into the Ausable River
• after heavy rainfalls.
The project is mainly
an upgrade that includes
adding a . sand filter .sys-
tem and improving • the
aeration system.
The upgrade part of
the project weighs in' at
$3,882,035 while the
expansion, mainly
enlarging one of the four
lagoons and deepening
another, will cost
$873,656.
Exeter won't pick up
the entire tab. Exeter's
share of the project is
$.1',636,766 (over
$620,000 of which has
already been spent on
engineering/prep fees)
while Stephen Township
will pick up $934,614
and Nabisco will pitch in
a yet to be agreed upon
amount.
The Ministry, of the
Environment has grant-
ed the project
$1,801,161.
Exeter chief adminis-
trative officer Rick
Hundey said the town
will pay for its share of
the project through
reserves and the sewer
rates.
Stephen will benefit by
hooking Huron Park into
Exeter's sewage system
meaning the facility
there will be decommis-
sioned.
The project was origi-
nally estimated to cost
5
w
$6.3 million but Exeter's
engineer showed the sys-
tem could operate with-
out a major component
MOE thought was need-
ed.
The project may cost
less than estimated since
the tender from St.
Marys contractor Stone
Town came in at
$4,015,971.62.
The project began
work last month and is
expected to be completed
in September 2000.
The project will not
address basement
sewage backups that
happened last year to
several Pryde Blvd.
homes. `

problem • there still
remains and the town is
still trying to identify the
sources.
He said there are prob-
ably many small prob-
lems rather than a major
source since smoke and
dye tests don't show any
big problems.
Bigger and better.
Work has started on the
improvements/expansion
of the Exeter sewage sys-
tem. Land moving •
machinery seen here are
working on the sand fil-
ter system at the sewage
lagoons.
