Soprano Michele Capalbo performs in London
Michele Capalbo (at far left) visited Medway High
School on May 7. She dropped in on her former
teacher John Fleet's music class.
ARVA - Last week a
former Granton area
singing virtuoso came
home.
Soprano soloist Michele
Capalbo (nee Giesen) was
in the area to perform in
the International Proms
held at Centennial Hall on
May 7. The concert also
featured the London
Fanshaw. Symphonic
Chorus.'conducted by
Gerald Fagan and the
Concert Players Orchestra.
Capalbo, now a resident
•ef New York City, has
come a long way.
After graduating from
Medway High School in
1985 she went on to study
vocal performance at the
University of Western
Ontario (UWO).
After UWO Capalbo
-tatVii.
was anxious to leave for
New York to study private-
ly.
"I was still learning how
to sing," she said. "I didn't
even wait for the gradua-
tion ceremony before I
lett."
Capalbo's big break
came this past January
when she . won the
Liederkranz Competition
in New York.
Since the international
competition her career
has really started to take
off.
Soon after the competi-
tion she was signed to sing
at Carnegie Hall.
"That was a real blast,"
she said, despite the fact
she only had two weeks to
prepare for the perfor-
mance. -
•
Despite ambitions to sing
at the Lascala House in
Milan, Capalbo is taking it
one day at a time.
"My first goal is always
to sing well and then
everything just sort of
looks after itself," she said.
Capalbo, whose speciali-
ty is the "big Italian repito-
rie," advises other inspir-
ing singers to audition any
potential voice teachers
and to work hard. "If it
hurts; run," she said.
