Corn planting is essen-
tially complete, and the
earliest planted corn is in
the two leaf stage. Dry
weather is raising con-
cerns about whether pre -
emerge herbicides will be
effective. If there is no
rainfall during the week
following herbicide appli-
cation, the field should be
harrowed or rotary •hoed
to remove the first flush of
weeds, and to activate the
herbicide. Watch the stage
of weed growth for post -
emerge herbicides or
mechanical control, as the
warm weather has
advanced the growth of
many weed seedlings.
Soybean planting is well
underway. Moisture con-
tinues to be a concern -
remember to plant so that
the seed is placed into a
half inch of moist soil.
Excessive tillage will dry
out the soil, so keep passes
over the field to a mini-
mum. Packing the soil is
crucial, since a fluffy
seedbed will continue to
dry out. Some fields will
need,packing before plant-
ing as well as after.
Winter wheat ranges
from Zadok's 29 (leaf
sheaths lengthening) to 31
weather a
(first node visible). Most
stands are in .excellent
condition, and dry weath-
er has kept Septoria and
Powdery Mildew from
advancing above the lower
leaves. This situation
could change quickly with
rainfall as the thick
canopy provides ideal con-
ditions for disease to
spread, so keep scouting
your fields. Spraying for
weeds in most wheat fields
is now revenge rather
than management, since
the winter annual weeds
have bolted and are
almost impossible to con-
trol.
Spring cereals have gen-
erally emerged well, but
some are showing stress
from dry weather and
from the sudden switch
from warm to cool. Weeds
are emerging with the
crop, so they need to be
monitored closely.
The canola crop is
emerging well in all but
the driest areas, where
emergence is uneven. The
dry weather means that
the plants haven't
absorbed the granular
insecticide yet, so all fields
should be monitored for
flea beetle feeding. Cool
weather has limited the
activity of flea beetles so
far, but they are ready to
ces weed gro!
take off once it warms up.
Early growth on alfalfa
has been good, but the
grasses are slow with the
dry weather. Many pas-
ture fields are standing
still, and need more time
yet. to; establish strong
growth. Over -grazing
early lri the season will
jrr. area crops
hurt production for the
entire season, so don't
push the pastures too hard
now.

pared by Soil & Crop

and north of Guelph.
