Grand Bend Salmon &
Trout Derby organizer Tim

Bob Green. Despite the
bad luck of Grand Bend
area media that spent a day
out on Lake Huron with
the Derby organizers,
everyone enjoyed the day
that included a barbecue at
Grand Bend's Pinedale
Motor Inn.The I Ith annual
Derby kicks off on May 15
and runs till May 24.There
is $30,000 in cash and _ -
prizes with $7,500 of -it
going to the angler Who
nabs the biggest salmon.
Anglers entered in the
Derby can fish from Blue
Point in the south to Port
Albert in the north.The weigh stations, Grand Bend Municipal Docks or
Goderich's North End Marina, are open from noon -9 p.m. each day except for
May 24 (Victoria Day) when they will be open noon -4 p.m. Derby tickets cost $18
for a single and $30 for a family.Ticket outlets in the TA coverage area include
Grand Bend's Barefoot Pedler, DV -US Charters, Fish Tales Charters, Forbes Fresh
Fish, Grand Bend Harbour Master, Pinedale Motor Inn and Tanqueray Charters,
Exeter Canadian Tire, Centralia's Gary's Auto & Marine, Kippen's Huron Sports
Outfitters, Lucan's Lankin Shell and Hensall's O'Brien's Bait &Tackle.
BluewaterTug ofWar. men off
to Switzerland for. tournament
DASHWOOD - The
Bluewater men's team
from Dashwood will ,be
travelling to Stans-
Oberdorf in Switzerland
to compete in a tug of war.
competition May 22-24.
This will mark the first
time an Ontario team will
compete at a European
competition other than a
world championship.
The Bluewater squad
will be participating in the
640 and 680 kg weight
divisions between tug of
war teams from as many
as nine European coun-
tries.
According to Bluewater
coach Jim Connolly, there
will be 10 members of his
club travelling to the
Swiss town next month.
In addition, a member
of the South Easthope
organization will join the
group from Dashwood.
Connolly, who has just
completed his first season
with the Bluewater club,
has been training his men
for the event.
The 1998 team (men
and women) won the
Ontario Tug of War
Championships in all
weight divisions in the
provincial circuit and in
February won both the
Shuffleboard

Tom Kempel are also
planning to attend the
Swiss event.
Monteith will be report-

Kemple, who, in addition
to his Ontario responsibil-
ities, is chief referee for
CATOWA. He served as a
competition judge at the
World Tug of War
Championships ,last
September in Rochester,
MN, and has a keen inter-
est in developing a
national team of judges
across Canada.
Both regard this type of
international team visita-
tion as a very important
step in the expansion of
the sport of tug of war in
their country.
The co-ordinator for the
event is Marcus Sax of
Switzerland. Sax spent
the summer of 1996 in
Canada and competed
regularly with the
Bluewater team during.
his stay.
. In March he was in
touch with Rob Hoffman,
a member of the team
from Dashwood, and
invited the club to the
Swiss tournament.
Other countries which
have teams planning to
participate are England,
Germany, Ireland, Italy,
Latvia, ' Netherlands,
Sweden, Switzerland and
USA.
