The Times -Advocate is p;i:Ased to have presented
Kate's Canine Corner as a public ser-

thank our readers for their questions
and Kate Fletcher for taking the time to
prepare the answers.

We are crate -training our new
puppy. It is going very well and
he's catching on quickly. Some
people frown when we mention
'crate training' but those who
have trained their dogs this way
say "go for it!". Do you have any tips or sugges-
tions?
Crate training is a wonderful thing.
A dog crate gives your puppy a home of its own
and a place to go when you leave it alone. You
will also find it invaluable during those chewing
months when your puppy's gums are sore
because its new teeth are emerging.
The example I use to explain the benefits of a
crate for your puppy is this.
Picture your .puppy loose in a barricaded
kitchen while you go to work. Your puppy gets
bored with its toys and finds a garbage can with a
lid not on properly and being a puppy, knocks the
can over spilling the contents all over your floor.
Other than making a mess of your kitchen this is
now a very dangerous and potentially deadly situ-
ation for your puppy. Your puppy can swallow
plastic wrap or other objects which can become
obstructed and can lead to death if not treated
immediately.
Now let's say your puppy has finished playing
and wandered back to the bed you have for it and
gone to sleep. Soon you come home, and your
puppy forgetting all about what it has done is
happy to see you and comes running to greet you,
only to find that you are angry and mad at it, but
it doesn't really understand why.
So instead of a happy reunion, your puppy asso-
ciates your return with a negative experience and
may even run and hide. If your puppy had been
safe in its crate the entire time while you were
away, when you return you are happy to see your
puppy and yourpuppy is excited to see you. Your
puppy has been in its crate with safe toys and you
are not coming home to a mess.
The other thing that is important to mention
here is NEVER leave food and water in the crate
with your puppy while you are away. Your puppy
has no idea if you are at the store or gone to
work, they will see the food and water and eat
and drink. And now, what do they do?
It is much easier when housebreaking your
puppy to let your puppy out as soon as you get up.
Feed your puppy while you are dressing and
before heading out to work let your puppy out
before you put them in the crate.
Since your puppy has no water it is important in
the early months to come home at lunch, and let
your puppy out. Then your puppy will be fine until
you return home after work.
When using a crate you need to give your puppy
toys to keep him occupied while you are away but
make sure they are toys that are the unsupervised
type, never leave supervised toys with your puppy
when you are not present.
When we sell a puppy we recommend a molded
plastic type crate. This kind of crate gives your
pup the most privacy, has good ventilation, is eas-
ily cleaned, portable, long lasting, and the most
attractive crate style on the market.
These crates come in a variety of sizes, and are
great for transporting your dog on vacations, to
dog shows, or to the veterinarians. Your crate, if
properly looked after, should last for many years.
One thing you will want to remember is that your
pup is still growing so please make sure you keep
that in mind when choosing the size of your crate.
Using your crate in the van is excellent. It pro-
vides a safe environment for both you and your
dog. I can't tell you how many people I know who
have been in dangerous situations because their
dog decided to either sit in their lap or has
crawled under their feet while driving. Not to
mention if you have to come to an abrupt stop
your dog will not be suddenly thrown around in
your vehicle.
For those of you who don't have room to put a
crate in your car or van, canine seatbelts are
excellent.

SCAUNG DOWN DOESN'T MEAN SETTLING FOR LESSI
This compact rancher has plenty to offer to empty nesters.
The exterior boasts a main hip roof with gable accents, and horizontal siding enhanced by
decorative columns and wood detailing.
The front bedroom boasts a boxed out window seat with a feature window. The master
bedroom, like those in larger homes, features a three piece ensuite with a soaker tub.
An open plan for the kitchen, dining and great room provides a comfortably large area of
gatherings. The cook in the family will appreciate an efficient "U" shaped working layout
complete with a pantry. A cozy gas fireplace adds a warm touch.
Downstairs, an unfinished basement can house the future games room, hobby room or extra
bedrooms for the grandkids.
Plans for RV -604 may be obtained for $375.00 for a package of five complete sets of working
prints and $30.00 for each additional set of the same plan. Allow $15.00 extra to cover the
cost of postage and handling (B.C. residents add 7% sales tax to blueprint order) All
Canadian residents add 7% GST to blueprint order plus postage and handling.
This is one of our new designs. Many innovative plans are now available in our NEW
catalogue: Ranchers and Ranchers with Basements, which is available for $8.51 including
postage and handling and GST.
