Huron's ER safe from closures Katherine Harding TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER - It may be just' what the doctor ordered: more money to keep South Huron Hospital open 365 days of the year. The Ministry of Health and `:the South Huron Hospital Association have come up with an agree- ment to woo emergency service doctors to Exeter's hospital by offering more money. On May 7 Huron -Bruce MPP Helen Johns along with the Huron Perth Hospitals Partnership President Bonnie Adamson and • South Huron Hospital (SHH) site administrator Janice Cosgrove unveiled the Alternative Funding Agreement for Emergency Business Directory AUCTIONEER 6gizoft,cleg?,(liksotv FULLY UCENSED & BONDED, CALL OR FAX (5191666-0833 Plck up and sales of complete or partial estates. "This agreement pro- vides additional funding given to South Huron Hospital and what the - Ministry is asking for in return is that we have emergency -services pro- vided each and every day, evening and weekend of the year and that's • their guarantee to the Ministry for this additional fund- ing," said Johns. "The money will help to ensure that we have emergency services in the communi- ty•" •_ The new fundidtg will allow SHH to provide competitive hourly rates for all physicians working in the ER. Emergency service room doctors now receive a sessional wage of $70/per hour for nights and week- ends. At press time the new wage had not been finalized. "What the alternative payment plan does is it provides an hourly rate which is consistent across 24 hours and is competi- tive with the current mar- ket" said Cosgrove. Since last May, SHH has had to close its emergency room doors several times due to the shortage of doctors. Last February, Exeter received underser- viced designation from the Ministry of Health which states the town had been approved to be designated for eight general or family practitioners. Cosgrove is confident the increased funding will solve the doctor shortage in the ER. "We've already had interest from outside physicians when they heard that we were going to be taking a look at this type of prograf ." SHH- chief of staff Dr. David Hodder agrees with Cosgrove. "We are going to be much more successful in finding interested outside physicians because of the alternative payment plan," he said. "This agreement will make a big difference." "I think it is unlikely we will experience another It's a deal. "We are going in the right direction. All the local physicians endorse this wholeheartedly." Money for nurses, The trio also announced on May 7 SHH is in the process of hiring a nurse practitioner. "As far as retention and recruitment of doctors one of the models that has been identified as an inno- vative model for the future is a combination of the alternative payment plan and a nurse practi- tioner," said Adamson. "We are adopting that model in Exeter." The Ontario government also recently announced SHH will get $118,615 for RNs and RPNs. 1` L I.
