Paul Thompson reaps a bumper crop of threshing memories BLYTH - "If you're gonna do a play about thrashin', you got to make sure you get the costumes right," hardly what director Paul Thompson expected to begin his research inter- view, but obviously very useful. "I don't want to see those one piece outfits," his host adds, 'You know the ones that mechanics wear." Paul was in Seaforth with Tom Kale, Lou Rowland and Frank Bruxer, old colleagues from the threshing circuit, and he was getting a com- plete education - every- thing you wanted to know about barn and stook threshing. Paul was delighted that these sea- soned threshers' memo- ries were so vivid that the events they were reliving could have happened yes- terday. His visit was sup- posed to last an hour. It lasted closer to three. Paul came away with wonder- ful stories. That's what the direc- tor/creator of The Farm Show, 1837 and Barndance Live! is doing these days, driving the gravel roads of southwest- ern Ontario, visiting, talk- ing. He's finding people eager to relate fascinating anecdotes and technical advice about that very spe- cial time. All the stories farmers tell Paul Thompson will feed back into the writing and rehearsal process for a new play about the thresh- ing era for the Blyth Festival's silver anniver- sary season. And the pieces of machinery - well- worn pitch forks and the couple of hundred pounds of pulleys that folks have generously loaded into the back of his pickup will find a place in the show too. Death of a Hired Man, sponsored by Ideal Supply and CKNX Radio, will open at the Blyth Festival Sept. 2 and run until Sept. 12.
