Minor Hockey Association champion- - ship teams and the Jr. D champs is no minor feat and council wants to show -its appreciation. Council gave Rev. Bruce Pocock permission to have individual certif- icates of congratulation printed and sent out to each member — in- cluding coaches and staff — of the championship teams. Pocock asked for council's support at -its April 27 meeting. Council will pick up the costs for printing the certificates, although the cost hasn't been spec- ified yet, said ad- ministrator Ron Reymer. Council will also be recognizing its hockey teams by placing signs at the north and south en- trances to Lucan on Highway 4. The signs will stay up until De- cember. Other notes from the April 27 meeting: 'No' to Lucan Her- itage Council denied a re- quest from the Ifucan Area Heritage Society to pay for four tourism signs pointing towards the Lucanmuseum and log cabin. The two .larger signs would cost $153 each year and the two smaller signs would cost $60 an- nually. Two signs • were to be placed at the inter- section of Highways 4 and 7, while two others were to be placed inside the village. Students change schools SEAFORTH -In an ef- fort to reduce as much excess capacity in schools as possible, some Mitchell Public School students will attend Upper Thames Ele- mentary School next fall. Last Tuesday night in Seaforth the Avon Mait- land District School Board approved des- ignating a crowded - Mitchell Public School as a school for junior kin- dergarten to Grade 6 students. Grade 7 and 8 students who would nor- mally attend MPS will attend Upper Thames Elementary ' School, also in Mitchell (now West Perth). Superintendent Janet Baird -Jackson said the move was made on the recommendation of the West . Perth School Accommodation Com- mittee. Meetings have been held- in Mitchell in an ef- fort to answer all parent questions. Coun. Perry Caskan- ette cautioned council against paying for the signs because he , said that could result in sev- eral local organizations requesting money fer signs, including the Aus- able Centre and the Don- nelly Homestead.. He added- the money required for the signs should be minor for the Heritage Society to raise. Caskanette also said council has shown sup- port for Lucan Heritage in the past by giving them use of land for the log cabin. Council agreed with Caskanette to deny the money for the signs. Council also denied a request by Lucan Her- itage to forgive property taxes. Library back on .track Caskanette reported to council the arena board has approved in principle drawings for a new library by architect Paul Kershaw of London, who replaced .original ar- chitect Glen Herglotz. Caskanette said Ker- shaw is now working on a time line for the pro- ject and bas assured the arena board the cost of the . library vill come in at under $300,000. Construction on the li- brary, which was sup- posed to be finished by the end of January, was delayed when Herglotz's drawings weren't done in time and the arena board became unhappy with the project's progress. Lucan Biddulph gets a logo Council also decided on a logo for the new municipality of Lucan Biddulph. The new logo, which resembles the old Biddulph logo, will fea- ture a beaver and a green shamrock.
