IYs time to get SummerActive
HURON COUNTY -
Summer is rapidly
approaching and with it
comes SummerActive '99.
SummerActive '99 will be
taking place in Huron
County from May 1 to June
15 and is designed to show
residents the many benefits
that come with being physi-
cally active. It is a six week
celebration of healthy active
living and is for everyone,
regardless of age, ability or
gender.
During SummerActive '99,
many Huron County com-
munities will be hosting fun,
physically active opportuni-
ties that encourage people
to participate and experi-
ence the joys of active living.
Local recreation depart-
ments and organizations
will be offering many activi-
ties free of charge or for a
small fee. A schedule of
these activities can be
obtained by calling your
local recreation department.
In addition to these com-
munity events, various
workplaces and schools are
also organizing
SummerActive '99 activities
for their staff and students.
Sneaker Day, a popular
SummerActive event occurs,
on May 14. Join the millions
of Canadians who are plan-
ning to proudly wear their
sneakers anA„be a little
more active on this day.
Take Heart Huron, a project
of the Huron Heart Health
Network, is sponsoring
SummerActive '99 and has
provided door prizes for
many of these Huron County
events.
ParticipAction is also issu-
ing a first step challenge to
inactive adults in Ontario.
It's called the "30x4x2"
Personal Challenge. From
May 1 to June 15, 1999,
ParticipAction, in associa-
tion with community health
and recreation leaders, is
challenging every adult to
be active for 30 minutes a
day, for four 'days a week,
for two consecutive weeks.
It's fun, easy, and partici-
pants can win great prizes.
Simply obtain a copy of the
"30x4x2" Personal
Challenge Activity Log from
the Huron County Health
Unit or your local recreation
department, record your
activity and mail it back to
ParticipAction.
Participants can add up
their activities in periods of
at least 10 minutes each,
spaced throughout the day.
This makes it easier to fit
some physical activity into a
tight schedule. Find enjoy-
able opportunity in your
daily routine to become
physically active at home,
school, work and during
leisure time.
The "30x4x2" Personal -
Challenge builds upon
Canada's Physical Activity
Guide to Healthy Active
Living. The guide recom-
mends that adults accumu-
late 60 minutes of light
physical activity every day to
stay healthy or improve
health. This would include
slow walking, easy garden-
ing or stretching. As your
activity level progresses to
moderate effort, such as
brisk walking, raking leaves
or swimming, it can be cut
back to 35 minutes, 4 days a
week. The guide also stress-
es starting slowly and build-
ing up so that active living
becomes as natural as
brushing your teeth or
putting on your seatbelt.
Active living is. about
healthy choices. Pursue
activities for reasons that
are important to your enjoy-
ment, relaxation or friend-
ship. SummerActive '99 is
the perfect time to experi-
99
ence the benefits and possi-
bilities of an active healthy
lifestyle.
