Ouch! -:1999 race season begins at • Grand Bend Micro Speedway GRAND BEND - Grand Bend Micro Speedway is set to launch its fourth year of racing by the beach on its one-sixth mile paved playground of speed. The Speedway's first event is set to be held on Saturday, May '8, with rac- ing beginning at 7 p.m. New for the 1999.season will be the debut of the Mug Rootbeer Mini Super Truck, which is a down sized version of the Nascar Trucks. They sport a full body, full coil over suspen- sion, and they are powered by a 13 h.p. Honda motor and are expected to turn 11 -second lap times. The speedway will also be running the Junior Micro Sprints, •Mini Sprints and Micro Sprints along- side the Mini Super Trucks. Pit gates open at 4 p.m., practice starts at 5 p.m. with racing4starting at 7 p.m. Grandstand admission prices are as follows: adults $6, children ages seven to 14, $2, children six and under free. The Grand Bend Volleyball Club offers programs for youths, teens and adults. The club offers Monday -Friday youth (age 8-16) clinics throughout the summer, the first session set for July 5-9. Players will practice skills and drills from 10 a.m.-noon, break for lunch and free -time from noon -2 p.m. and end the day with supervised games and instruction from 2-4 p.m. Cost is $50 per week which includes a T-shirt for participating. The club offers a beach volleyball league for teens and adults Sundays from 1-5 p.m. with a competitive doubles league and a recreational team league. Both leagues cost $30 per team. Play starts July 10. The club will also host a number of tournaments this summer. The Region 3 Age Tournament (age 20 and under) is set for June 27; the Labatt Blue Grand Bend Open is July 1-4; the Ontario Volleyball Association Tournament is July 24-25 and the Provincial Championships are Aug. 7-8. Panther track team in Petroliacorn etes meet PETR LIA — Here are the highlight performances by South Huron District High School athletes at the Petrolia track and field meet held April 27: •Jonathan Brand placed third in his 100 m sprint heat with a time of 12.8 seconds. •Jodi Regier placed eighth in the 1,500 m with a time of 5:54. •Jasmine Lather placed sixth overall in the 400 m with a time of 69.0 seconds. •Ben Forrest scored a personal best in the high jump with a height of 1.75 m. •Eric Brownlee placed sixth with a throw of 40.49 m in javelin. •Lance Pfaff placed fourth in the tong jump with a distance of 5:42. The team will now focus on the Huron -P erg meet.on May 11-12. Local golfer notches ace at Ironwood EXETER — The first local hole -in -one of the year was stroked at Ironwood Golf Club last week. Jane Hefley notched the ace on the 117 -yard 4th hole using a 5 -iron on April 28.
