Noon hour busing cancelled in some areas
SEAFORTH -There will be no more
noon hour busing for kindergarten stu-
dents with the Avon Maitland District
School Board.
All every day/half day kindergarten pro-
grams requiring noon hour busing will be
.converted to full day/alternate day pro-
grams.
"It has become a traditional practice
that the board does not [offer noon hour
busing]," said associate .director, Join
Patterson.
In 1974 rural elementary schools in
Perth County cut transportation costs by
implementing full day/alternate, day
kindergarten programs, removing the
need for noon hour busing. City and town
schools were allowed to continue the half
day/every day programs which some-
times required noon hour busing. All
Huron County kindergarten programs
are full day/alternate day programs.
Last school year the board spent
$38,000 busing 58 students at noon from
St. Marys Central, Mitchell Pubic School,
Anne Hathaway Public School and
Listowel Eastdale.
Monika Gibson of St. Marys wrote a let-
ter to the board opposing the plan and
outlining benefits of the half day pro-
gram. A member of the St. Marys Central
School Council, Gibson wrote the school's
playground cannot accommodate the
additional students over the lunch hour.
Kindergarten students now take their
own morning recess because the yard is
too small for the entire student body.
Gibson also' provided:the board with
research materials on half day and full
day kindergarten programs, which
Patterson described as "useful."
Trustee Margaret Laprade said the. par-
ents of these kindergarten students pre-
fer the half day program and are willing
to provide their own transportation at
noon hour.
"If the community wants to keep it that
way and it isn't costing us, it could con-
tinue," said Patterson.
Trustees approved an amendment to
their transportation policy that eliminates
noon hour busing. Transportation for
students with special circumstances will
be considered. ,
HURON PARK -- Any-

and Cpl. Marc Leclerc

Borden to help organize
the 1999 Grand Bend
International Air Show,
to take place in Huron
Park on June 16.
Canada has 100 Grif-
fin helicopters in its
fleet. Holbrook said the
helicopter's role is to
support the army. He
said the Griffin is ba-
sically like an airborne
pickup truck; which
carries troops and
goods.
"It's a workhorse," he
said of the three-year-
old chopper.
Robinson added the
Griffin cruises at a
speed of 220 km/h and
can reach speeds of
260 km/h.
Tom Lawson, chair-
man of the show, said
he expects 10,000 peo-
ple at the free event,
and said there will be a
raffle for plane rides: Or-
ganizers are also encour-
aging spectators to bring
donations for the food
bank.
