EXETER — A disturb-
ing act of cruelty against
animals has been com-
mitted in Exeter.
On Friday, Exeter OPP
discovered a gruesome
scene in the wood lot
behind the Recreation
Centre.
Dead sparrows and a
blue jay were found
hanging with fishing line
tied to their feet from a
lower limb of a tree.
It appears the birds
were beaten to death
with sticks. Evidence at
the scene indicates up to
10 birds were killed in
this manner.
Police have no suspects
at this time. The
Recreation Centre has
been contacted to keep
an eye on the area.

South Beach?
GRAND BEND — Will the public be able to use the
South Beach at the end of Lake Rd. this summer?
Council has scheduled a meeting with the North
Shoreline Property Owners Association (NSPOA) .for
May 14 to discuss the issue of public use of the popular
stretch of beach.
"Ability of public access is still a concern," said Coun.
Bob Mann, who brought the lingering issue to
Monday's council meeting. "The question remains for
us whether there will be further conflicts between
users and land owners."
For the past two summers, the six property owners
who belong to NSPOA and have title to the beach, have
posted a `Private Beach' sign citing public misuse as a
problem.
Mayor Cam Ivey told council he received a letter on
April 20 from Frank Butterworth, a member of NSPOA,
requesting to set upa meeting with council to discuss
N g g
the issue. Ivey commented however that despite'
attempts to set up a meeting "he doesn't appear to be
coming to the table."
"We have to take the bull by the horns and set up a
meeting ourselves," said Ivey.
"The issue is public use," said Ivey. "We want to work
out an arrangement." Grand Bend has never made a
claim to the land in question.
The land located in the Lake Rd. South Beach area is
the original Southcott family lots purchased in 1900.
When Southcott Pines was established in 1944, this
area was not included because it had been already sold
to private investors and is not part of the subdivision.
