Jr. boys tie; seniors lose in soccer action
EXETER — If you're
going to learn from loss-
es, it's better to get them
out of the way early.
That's the attitude
South Huron District High
School senior boys soccer
coach George McEwan
has after his team lost to
visiting Wingham F.E.
Madill 2-1 on Nabisco
Field last week.
The Panthers fell behind
2-0 early due to poor
marking and unmotivated
play.
McEwan said his play-
ers had poor ball control
and showed sloppy pass-
ing which limited ,their
chances to score.
Dan Snell took a nice
cross from Ryan Beattie
to score SHDHS's lone
goal late in the first half.
The second half saw the
Panthers carry the play
but they couldn't get any
good shooting chances.
Chad Monteith had
some shots on net but he
was forced to shoot from
the outside and the Madill
keeper was able to tip it
over the bar.
The seniors are 1-1 on
the season and next host
S.t. Anne's today
(Wednesday) at Nabisco
Field starting at 3 p.m. .
The Panther juniors bat-
tled Madill to a 0-0 draw.
Coach Bill Shore said it
was a good, evenly
matched game.
Tom Phouttarath
earned the shutout for the
Panthers and made sever-
al jumping and diving
saves.
Vince Inthisorn had the
best scoring opportunity
for the Panthers when he
found the ball at his feet
while standing on the goal
line. He was unable to
convert before he. was
swarmed by the
Wingham defence.
The junior record is a
win and a tie.
The Panther girls soccer
teams started their sea-
son yesterday after press
at Madill. Their first home
league game is April 27
versus Clinton Central
Huron.
The Panther senior girls
host their annual invita-
tional tournament on
Saturday at the high
school and Nabisco fields.

SHDHS rugby teams shine vs. Madill
EXETER 4 --the South
Huron junior boys rugby
team proved that never
giving up has its rewards.
The juniors came from a
10-0 deficit after the first

Madill 17-15 at home last
week.
Brad Turnbull scored a
brilliant try on a 40 m run
and Tanner Ingram and
Ryan Grootalso scored
excellent tries. Bryan
Evans kicked one convert.
The senior boys exceed-
ed the expectations of
coach Terry O'Rourke
and played a great game
in a 14-0 victory over
Madill.
Jason Neil and

Bourne said about
Friday's game.
Bukala said, his team
saved their best for last.
"Friday was our best
hockey game all year," he
said.
Bourne said winning the
championship was "a
relief.
"It's quit fulfilling," he
said.
Bukala said it was an
incredible night for the
young players from the
puck drop at 7:30 p.m. to
the ride home and the fire
truck ride to when the
party broke up after 6

"Those 12 hours will
last a lifetime," he said.
Bukala had special
thanks for the fans who
accounted for half or even
more of the people on

Wellesley.
"The fans are great,
especially on the road,"
he said. "They made a big

way to the OHA champi-

The Irish hope to have a
solid nucleus of returning
players next season but
will lose some important
cogs in the `Green
Machine'.
Overage players Mark
Phillips and captain Mike
Jaremchenko have played
their last junior hockey
games. Kevin Dunbar,
Jason Amey, Andy
Marshall, Mike Davis and

next season. Two of those
players can return.

Bourne said the battle
for London high school
supremacy may victimize
the Irish next season
since four players from
this year's squad attend
Oakridge High School
(Mulligan, Wagner, Steer
and Judson).
On the other hand, the
title should make it easier
for the Irish to draw play-
